Why are people so impatient in fast food lines?

I work in the fast food industry and nothing irritates me the most than having impatient customers. I understand that the term "fast food" means that the food should be delivered quickly. But, seriously--it takes time to prepare the food correctly and to have the order assembled correctly. The worst complaints are from Greyhound passengers who come into the resturant where I work (which is directly across the street form the Greyhound station) they place their order(s) and complain that if they don't get their food in a hurry, they will miss their bus. More often than not, the driver is standing next to them, placing his/her order. I tell them politely that there are a few orders ahead of theirs and it will be up in a few minutes. Sometimes, they are ok with that, and other times they throw a fit demanding their money back. As for the other patrons of the resturant, I can't figure that out. I try very hard to be polite with these people, but I'm finding that is becoming very difficult. Any thoughts??

Unfortunately I don't think their impatience and rudeness is confined to fast food places. So very many people seem to think that they should never have to wait for anything. This is not confined to just younger people either, all ages think only of themselves. When I am in a line and people around me are impatient, I just pull out my book or something, when the cashier or whoever finally takes my order or what ever and apologizes for the wait, I just smile and tell them its okay, they can only do so much at a time. I think that makes at least two people feel better-------me and the cashier.

That's wonderful! I wish there were more people like you out there! (I'm sure there is...) It's very true, I do see it in alot of other places I go and it isn't just the younger generation, either. A good majority of my customers are patient and I do always apologize for their wait, but it's the inconsiderate few that get under my skin(especially at lunch!). Thanks for your post!

Melissa,I think you are getting burned out at this job.Why don't you try a restaurant where people expect to wait and you will make more money and great tips.People that go to fast food places do expect alot for their buck on the most part.I'm not sure why this is.We live in a society where everyone is in a hurry. We rush like crazy to get somewhere to wait...then rush again to get to the next place where we will wait in line... We all need to take a deep breath and relax...Our big rushing usually cost us more time in the long run... Good luck with your job,Hun,and just keep smiling.

It makes me so mad sometimes people just need to slow down and enjoy life instead of being in a Hurry all the time. You just keep doing your Best and the heck with the people who get mad cause there food is gonna take a minute.LOL If they get it to fast then they get mad cause it aint right or something. Have a Great Day

thanks for the words of encouragement! You're right though--I think it's because everyone is in a hurry. For what, I'm not sure. And it's true, the do get mad if their order is wrong, but we got it to them quickly.....

i guess maybe because it's a "fast food chain" so they expect that the service is fast, but if they can wait so long they can eat on a restaurants than in fast food.
