Do you feel left out when people talk about TV shows?

I have found that the television shows I enjoy aren't often the ones that are popular, and that the ones that are popular usually just don't interest me. Every day people around me talk about Grey's Anatomy, Lost, American Idol... and I've tried watching all of these shows without ever really getting into them. I guess I'm just weird. =p Anyways, am I alone here? Does anyone else feel left out when everyone around them is talking about shows they simply don't enjoy? Have you ever actually followed a show that you didn't enjoy just to be able to make conversation?

The only actual t.v. show I watch is Crossing Jordan other than that it's just the news or Nascar. I don't feel left out. I just get annoyed when people think I am nuts for not watching those shows.

Do you think Crossing Jordan will come back for another season?

I'm not sure I was beginning to think they cancelled it before this season started and then they changed the night it was on

Most of the people at my office talked of local miniseries or telenovelas and i don't watch those shows. They would tell me bits and pieces of the story,I would listen politely and i still don't watch the show. I watch Grey's Anatomy, American Idol, CSI, Law and Order in Cable, and i don't have people to talk to about the shows that i've watched. It's not that they don't have cable, they do, they're not just interested with those kind of shows. I get updates here in mylot about the tv series that i watch, we're a season behind. And we're hours late on american idol, i would see the result here at mylot.lol.

I think it's interesting that the same shows I complain about people talking about are the ones you wish you had someone to talk to about. That kind of puts things in perspective for me. Thanks! I've experienced some of the same situations with things like anime that I watch, that come from other countries. I might be seasons behind the people that I talk to online that like in Japan and watch it, or I might even be watching a show that came out there 10 years ago! It's funny how those things happen!

Oh I know exactly what you mean. I don't watch any of the ones you metnioned. The ones I do watch don't seem to be mentioned that often but the others sure are. I don't watch them at all. I don't watch any of the Reality shows so that leaves a lot of the ones that are mentioned. I won't watch something I don't enjoy to be able to fit in. I just find others who watch shows I like to talk with about them that's all. Now if they mention a show that sounds interesting I might watch it but if I don't like it I'll tell them that. Let them know why I didn't and sometimes that can prove to be an interesting conversation.

Mostly lately CSI shows and NCIS. I do watch Stargate SG1 and Stargate Altantis along with Smallville but mostly because it's what my brother is watching and I'm right in front of the TV. They are good shows but I probably wouldn't have chosen them on my own. I also like Shark and I do watch the Soprano's now and then. The rest it's mostly reruns, like Charmed, Judging Amy or Crossing Jordan.

I've never been able to watch CSI type stuff, gives me nightmares. I have watched some of the Stargate series, and I really liked it! I also really liked Charmed, though I didn't want to. When it first came out, I was like "Oooh that's so inaccurate!" but I grew to love it anyway. =)

Yes this is also true with anime, where people all tell you they love something, but if you say anything against it, it'll be thrown back in your face Cant please everybody, so i aim only to please myself, that way im rarely disappointed =p

Haha, I get that every time I say I hated Akira. That was the first anime I saw, and for years I thought I hated anime because I thought it was all like Akira. =p It like what you said about only pleasing yourself, that's nice. =)

I don't feel left out 'cos I do not watch the new shows I watch all these shows after a season or two is gone. I am regualr TV watcher for CSI shows and Criminal minds (a similar program on crime) But the rest I just do not follow them forever I just watch Dancing with the stars when I remember the day and time, mostly watch History channel so those are programs that get repeated quite often and hence I have less and less chance of missing these shows. When people talk of the popular shows like lost or house or American Idol I just say I do not watch these shows 'cos I don't have any intrest for them and even if they continue discussing the topic I do not feel left out 'cos I try to listen to what the other person has to say about the show that they are so passionate about. Well that's me and thanks for asking :)

It works like a charm all the time Lecanis! Also there are other things to life than TV and other forms of entertainment than TV. Well I love going to broadway show once a while (too expensive to be a regular customer) or love watching movie in the theatre, or reading a book, or sitting down on my scrapbooking table and happily Scrap away our memories of last fun trip to where-ever it was! Then I love sitting in my patio and watch the serene backyard , go for a walk there are much more things to do than just watch the TV I feel, we infact waste our goodtime sitting infront of the idiot box!

I have the same problem more because i dont watch alot of tv but when i do I watch TLC and watch home improvment shows or "what not to wear" or "shalom in the home" 'little people big world" things like that so other then idol this year i basically have no clue whats is going with all the popular shows. I also feel this way when it comes to people talking about movies if i have not just recntly seen it please dont say to me remeber when she or he said this or that casue though i watch a movie and enjoy it dont mean i am going to memorize parts of it for future discussion.

Thanks for your response. =) I have that experience too! Unless I was really fond of a movie, I'm probably not going to know what they are talking about unless I just saw it. There are some movies that are my favorites that I know lots of lines and such from (The Princess Bride is one) but most of the newer stuff I watch just doesn't stick with me that much. My brain must be running out of the space allocated to such things.

Lecanis, I don't have any friends to talk about TV shows around me! My partner and I live fairly secluded lives with mostly our children for visitors. Gee....does that sound pathetic or what! We do watch Grey's Anatomy, but I won't tell you about the last episode. We do not watch American Idol. We do not watch Lost. We both love and agree on House! I am an FX Junkie - Have to have my Tuesday Night 10:00 fix of The Shield, Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck, and now the newest one Dirt. Okay, and I will admit to Survivor (however, after this season I don't know that I'll watch it again), and I really like Big Brother (they are the only 2 reality shows) - will not watch Apprentice again! That's as much TV as I watch (almost) ~Donna

Hi Donna! *hug attacks* You know, I've heard a lot of good things about House, and I still haven't gotten around to watching any of it. I'll have to check it out! I haven't considered the possibility of not having anyone talk to such things around you, because I have a full-time job working at a bank, so I get to deal with both my coworkers and customers everyday. Thanks for sharing!

I have to admit I like the shows Lost, Supernatural, and the Ghost Whisperer. I don't let them run my life, especially since I have them set to record. I never got into American Idol,Grey's Anatomy or a lot of those other shows. I don't really get into the cartoons my kids watch except for Spongebob, something about that yellow sponge that is just to cute. Honestly I could care less if people around me didn't like what I watched and vice versa. There not sitting in my house at night when my shows come on.

I saw a couple episodes of the Ghost Whisperer because someone I knew had some songs he'd written on there, and I thought it was pretty neat. I wish I had more time to watch things like that! I need to get a Tivo or something. =p

I guess I'm on the oposite side here, I'm one of the few that I work with that actually gets to watch these shows because I work nights and we're all at work when these shows are on. I have a dvr just for the purpose of watching these shows. I dont expect everybody to like every show because everyone has different tastes. I dont think I would watch a show just to be part of the conversation at the water cooler. I really dont talk about the shows that I watch at all anyway. Take care!!

Thanks for sharing! I really need to get a dvr from what I hear about them! I'm just too busy most of the time to watch things when they are on, and I might enjoy shows more if I could see every episode and not just once in a while. I guess my coworkers must just be bored or something, they talk about tv all day sometimes if it's slow at the bank.

I am in full agreement with you. I tend to not watch most of the most popular shows and I find that I overhear many talking about them. I always feel lost. But, that's ok. I enjoy some shows, but I just can't get into a lot of the ones that most seem to find interesting. I don't really know why, but Lost, Grey's Anatomy, and others like that, just don't really appeal to me. Oh well, such is life.

*laughs* Naruto might be a popular anime, but at the place where I work, no one but me watches anime. =p I did try to watch American Idol for a really short time, just because I wanted to be part of the conversation, and I gave up on it for pretty much the reason you mentioned!

Even though I watch a fair share of television programs--more than I should--I do feel left out of the loop when a few coworkers are discussing one of the more popular ones that I don't watch--24, for example, or The Sopranos. While I know they're probably wonderful shows, there just aren't enough hours in the day.

Yes, I call them 'Coronation Street Tangents'. I have nothing to contribute and don't get the various references. I's the same with my science fiction programs, no one else really watches thm and they are ridiculed when it comes up, so I normally don't say anything.

It is a normal phenomenon you will meet when you communicate with others. From this point, I can make a conclusion you are a friendly and talktive man.You always want to resonate your talking partner. My opinion is that you don't need to worry about that.TV shows are just entertainmet people watch when bored. If the situation you refered occurs, you can change a topic you like or keep silent, because listening to others itself is respecting others. So be easy!

sometimes i also feel left out when it comes to the shows i watch... my friends like to watch local shows most of the time and I love shows like what you have mentioned, my friend's are not to that shows. It's a little bit the opposite. when they talk about our local shows in here, i feel like, what the hell are they talking about again? again??? but i don't go to the extreme of watching those shows just because they are watching it. I just listen to what they are talking for a while, ask a few questions about the show then it will be over. after that a new conversation will happen and i could join in... they usually know i don't know much about what they are talking with those shows. and i am just happy to listen to them talk.

I know what you mean. I don't watch any of the shows you named. 'American Idol' seems to be popular with EVERYone. It is amazing. Young or old, millions watch it it. I felt weird when everyone and their dog watched 'Seinfeld', and I never saw an episode a day in my life! I felt weird when they would talk about that, but fortunately we had other things in common. : )

No I would never see a t.v. show just to fit in. I never saw Friends, Roseanne, or the Cosbys because they didn't interest me and life is too short to watch something you are not into. I haven't seen Grey's Anatomy or Lost either. What show(s) do you like? I may like them too.

I like Scrubs the best when it comes to non-animated things. I'm also really fond of Will & Grace. Otherwise, most of what I watch is cartoons, both anime and American cartoons. I like Naruto, which is really popular now but no one had heard of it when I first discovered it a few years ago. For American cartoons: Fairly Oddparents, Spongebob Squarepants, the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. I suppose I watch a lot of kid's shows with my son, It's a Big, Big World being our very favorite.

I feel left out when people are talking about tv shows but not for the same reason. I feel left out because I don't watch tv. I will watch the dvds of some shows like House and Grey's Anatomy when they come out but then I am still a season behind. I tend to cover my ears and say don't tell me! lol! Hello, lecanis, sometimes i found some difficulties in getting into the conversations of my friends as I do not always follow TV series,I only watched some of them occasionally,so i may not be able to understand what they are talking sometimes, and i do not want to interrupt their conversations,i will just listen to them.

I only watch things occasionally too. Even TV shows that I really like, I don't follow every single time they come on, just because I have things going on in the real world that are more important. It sounds like you have a nice response to this, just listening. =)

I completely agree. Most of these shows have something about them that seems to appeal to segment of a people who want to fit in. That is, so that they aren't left out of the discussion about American Idol or Lost around the water cooler, they watch, and get hooked. Another thing, I can't stand the notion of having to watch these shows each and every week to keep up. I rarely watch a program week-in-and-week-out. The only time I was roped into watching a show was "24" when my friend begged me to watch season 2. I thought it was very good, but I didn't watch after season 2 due to the problem I stated in the previous paragraph. I prefer to watch re-runs, typically on USA or TNT instead of having the watch a X time on X night on X network, and then, have to change my schedule when they change theirs. No thanks.

I can't stand the though of having to watch things all hte time to keep up either. When I was younger, I did that, and I feel like I wasted a lot of my time and brain space just remembering when things came on. These days I really like watching whole seasons of tv episodes on DVD or watching educational programs that have a new topic each week so you don't really have to keep up.
