networking vs. pyramid scam?

My husband has been invited to join a networking company which requires a small amount of registration. Now he is interested of joining it and even made watch a video presentation of that company. Lastyear, i asked permission from him if i could at least attend a seminar about networking because i have been invited by a close friend of mine, he refused without explaination saying id be better staying home and going out. Now he is not asking permission from me and i have nothing against networking but then how do i tell him that he was unfair..and how do u compare a legitimate networking stint from a pyramid scam?because i have been a victim of pyramid scam once.
