Narsil was the sword of Isildur. It has been broken, then reforged to be usedby Aragorn to revcover his legitime Kindom. Excalibur was also a magic sword that couldn't be used by anyone but King Arthur, who also recovered that way his legitime kindom. Go you agree this is a cover by Tolkien of this ancient legend? Tolkien has studied a lot of mythology from England and other Northern Europena countries, do you know other old stories referred in his books? Do you like this kind of stories? how far do you know about them?

The worlds that J.R.R. Tolkien created are phenomenal, and like the stories of Camelot its based in the ages old struggle between two powers, good and evil. The heaven of Lothlorien to the hell fires of Mordor. Its no wonder why both the stories have so many similarities yet so different. The icon in the King Arthur legends is certainly Excalibur, but in Tolkien I believe Narsil is down played to some extent so that the ring takes the presented place of the true icon. Tolkien being a literary professor and language scholar took full advantage of his knowledge, but look at what a rich full world he gave us including the prose and poetry of the Elven language.

There are hundreds of tales from myth and legend, about dragons for example. There are tales of dragons from around the world, and tales of magical swords and magical creatures too. I believe Tolkein took his inspiration from the tales of myth and legend and made them plausible and believeable. I love reading stories involving magical creatures and of the old legends, I am currently reading a series of books my Marion Zimmer Bradley about the ancient druids and pagans, and these books are wonderful

Oh, I LOVE those kind of stories. When I was in Middle school I always go to the library to read up on legends of knights, dragons, and medieval times. Though I didn't really enjoy reading Tolkien's books. I always get lost at the language he's using. I also read a lot about mythology specially Greek and Roman. I used to know all the gods and goddesses by heart.

I have not read anything by Tolkeien, but I do know the legends of King Arthur, Excaliber and Merlin the Magician. I learned this through the writings of Mary Stewart, she wrote a trilogy centered upon Merlin's life and it was called the Hollow Hills trilogy. I read the three books when I was in Junior High school, it was pretty fascinating reading and the writer really made it come alive for me. I wish everyone could find something like that to read, you have no idea how wonderful it is reading a good book.

I know the story of Excalibur and Merlin the Magician and King Arthur. I learned it from the books by Martha Stewart, the Hollow Hills trilogy. It was a very well written series and I read it when I was very young. I have not read much Tolkein so I don't know about Narsil, but I imagine researched and made a relevant story. I enjoy reading stories about mythology as long as they are written well and not just dry prose.
