How Do You Get A Chihuahua To Behave?

I love Chihuahuas, but they are so naughty. A friend of mine once had one and I am thinking about getting one, because they are so much fun, but they are also bad little dogs.
When I would try to get her dog to go to the back yard at night, it was a job. I would put down a trail of meat to coax him out, but then he got wise to that. So I had to come up behind him and throw a towel over his face and then carry him out.
When the mail man or some other worker came, he would jump up and down and bark and they would get scared, so I would have to explain that it was just a little dog trying to be tough. They are a lot of fun though. When I would open the door to let him in in the morning, he would shoot across the house like a bat out of hell going to my friend. It was fun to watch him go.
Does it do any good to send these dogs to obedience school and if so? And if so, does that take all the fun out of them?

My whole life I have had a Chihuahua or one that was mixed around me and I have never had one be a naughty dog, if you get it young enough ane train it to behave when it is young, it will be well behaved and loving little critter. Right now, I have a chihuahua, daushaund, jack russel terrier mix, Yes, he is hyper, but he knows when it is time to settle down and he is well behaved, I got him when he was just barely 8 weeks old and started training him right away. he does bark when he hears an unfamiliar vehicle pull into the driveway, and he doesn't seem to like it when people are riding horses by the house, but otherwise, he is very quiet and never barks or even whines, except in his sleep, sometimes he gets a little nutty in his sleep. But they cah be good little dogs and I have always been told that htey are a great pet for persons with asthma.

I had never heard about them being good for people with asthma. I have asthma and it seems to be getting worse, so I guess that is another good reason to consider a Chihuahua.
I have seen some poeple do some interesting things in the name of disciplining their dogs, so I want to be careful to do the right thing and not abuse them. The are so much like children, when it comes to loyalty and abuse.

Your friend's dog needed a good dose of crate training. Any dog will misbehave if let do so, all you have to do is get busy and train your dog to do what you want it to do from the very start, and punish it when it misbehaves. I've seen some perfectly adorable, well behaved (albeit yappy) chihuahuas.

I do not know what crate training is. Is it to confine the dog to a milk crate? If so, isn't that kind of cruel. I know that dogs can be conditioned, but it takes time. I did not have enough time to do that with her dog.
I am deciding now which kind of dog I want to get. My favorite is definitely the Chihuahua. All I know for sure though, is that I want a small dog, that stays small.

All dogs can be naughty if they're not trained to behave from day 1 - we had a long haired chihuahua at one stage & he was a lot of fun, not aggressive & always well behaved!
Don't throw a towel over their head, it can cause aggression (as in, that's how some people teach their dogs to get nasty) - not that it matters much there coz he's not your dog & therefore isn't your responsibility.
They aren't little dogs trying to be tough - did you know a dog like that can cause the same if not more damage than a large dog??? They can have nasty streaks & when they bite, their little sharp teeth can cause a LOT of injuries.
You can train them yourself if you get it as a pup, but of course, any dog can benefit from proper obedience training. Of course obedience wont take the fun out of them, it just makes them obedient - if you tell them no, they will listen but if you want to play they know the difference & will play.
I think, if you get a dog of any kind, obedience would be the best option coz it will also teach you a lot of things about owning a job coz going on the questions you asked, you don't have much experience with dogs.
I wish you well & remember dogs are a lot of fun & great companions! With training you also get a VERY well behaved dog that will do as he's told & not cause you any problems!

Chihuahuas (or any breed) are only naughty if people allow them to be. Toy dogs get this bad rap because people tend to spoil them and fawn over them and let them get away with murder.
Get your dogs a good crate, not a milk crate, a dog crate. They sell them at Petco, you can get the small ones for really cheap. Its like a plastic travel carrier. Or you can get a wire one. . whatever you prefer. They should really be sleeping in those indoors at night because small dogs are vulnerable to predators like hawks, coyotes and bobcats at night.
As for the behavioral problems, you need to start setting some boundaries for you dogs. Instead of writing off bad behavior as "oh he's trying to be tough", start CORRECTING the behavior you don't want with a strong "No!" and then make him stop barking. You can throw cans full of pennies at the floor to startle them, or give them a correction with a leash. Don't be afraid to be kind of tough. These dogs have grown up taking advantage of you!
There is nothing so uncute as a vicious little dog trying to bite the head off of anyone who comes to the front door. Its not that hes "trying" to be tough, its called aggression and it should never ever be tolerated, no matter how small they are.
I would also suggest taking your dogs for walks every day because it sounds like they have a lot of pent up frustration from a lack of physical and mental stimulation. Small dogs need exercise too, and running from couch to recliner doesn't count!
As for the obedience school, personally I think they are only good for socialization, but if your dogs really need the assistance of a professional, then go ahead and go. I think a little work on your part and you should be able to get them under control yourself.
