Who's That Lady on the Starbucks Cup

I have long been a lover of Starbucks coffee. Some say that it is too strong, but the stronger the better as far as I'm concerned. My question is: What is the significance of the lady that appears in the Starbucks logo? She looks a bit like a mermaid if you ask me, but I don't know for sure and was wondering if anyone had any insights.

It was modeled after a 15th century Norse Woodcut... It's a twin-tailed mermaid, or siren in Greek mythology. The orignal showed the tails and her topless body. But, that has now been cropped so know all that is visible is the head and the end of the tails. The store in Seattle still has the original logo though.

She is a coffee customer i think. After their sales hit the market they offered a lady to promote their product and hence she makes a place on the posters.
