Where do you find your new music?

Friends who have trusted tastes are a great source.. but its not always a fast and sure method.. if you just want to find music where do you go? I read some sites like pitchfork.com nme.com and I browse forums and get to hear what is new, also for new old music I love tracking people through wikipedia.. Search an artist you like and just start clicking links learning about the genre.. usually stumble on to something. Since so much new music is out these days I find sources like the sites above can just present a certain genre, myspace is a pain to use and hard it takes a while for quality. what are you doing?

My favorite way to discover new songs is last.fm This is an internet radio that will try to discover your tastes then play music that you will likely appreciate. I have discovered lots of new songs since I joined this site. last.fm is also a community gethered around music. It is possible to make friends there and the tool matches you automatically with people who share your musical tastes which I find a great feature. I wrote a detailed post a few months ago about lastfm on mylot. You can find the discussion from my profile. I also describe how to install the lastfm player in that discussion. Happy listening.

I usually do some research on various pages to find out what is new, and then go to a torrent site to see if i can find something to download by them. I dont use those weird peer to peer programs like limewire or aeres, but if i can't find omsething then i'll ask my friend that DOES use those programs if she can find something for me. Usualy between my friends and the torrents i can find what i'm looking for. And you can also see the video's on youtube! i often go there if i just wanna listen to the song once.

I discover new music by downloading random songs, and if I like them I search for more by that artist. I also sometimes check out the world charts and discover new artists that way..:)

this was the way i discovered as a kid some of the music i like today. In fact, without downloading illegally from the internet - i probably would not even listen to music today - because i would not have bothered wasting money from buying random cds from shops.

i do research. i discover new music from my friends, reviews from the net, and the trustworthy search engines. whatever it is that they say is a good song, i "test" in projectplaylist.com... it's a nice site were you could find new songs too. and if you have a myspace account or any social networks, this would be a great site were you could "pimp" your site. and the fact that you could share your playlist to your 'buddies' makes it easier for you to discover new songs. just try it.

http://swicki.eurekster.com/ have you seen this site? They are trying to gain ground in the trustworthy search engine market buy ketting people make their own and attach them to blogs or whatever. Its like the wild west claiming the names of "swickis" its all a bit confusing with the terminology but i'm sure there are some good search engines in there.

I usually check out the I-tunes free download of the week. I look around myspace for new bands as well. I listen to public radio because they play a lot of bands that don't get mainstream air play... and of course friends share their finds.

I found it through videos. For example when I watch some video on youtube (mostly AMV) and I like the song, I'll download it.

errm.. i used to update myself on music through yahoo music.. and i think it's really updated.. i get to find many songs there.. and i always find the one that i really like.. i agree with you.. myspace is a pain to use and hard difficult to find a good quality ones.. you can try a few other websites.. you might even try googling to search for songs.. the probability of success is low.. but i still get to find many songs there....sometimes i'll go to the chinese websites to find for chinese songs..i like those site because i think they update chinese songs more frequently compared to english songs =)

i have trimmed my tastes to particular artists now - only gaining interest in new artists through friends. but when i want to find new releases or upcoming releases from my favourite artists i just look on wikipedia.org and search for that artist - usually the site is very up to date with an up to date discography.

I recently got my new laptop, it is a media center machine. When opening and using MS Media Player, it asks if you want a link to Urge. Urge is the online media store that microsoft uses. The have downloads, and radio stations, but the one thing I like is a weekly newsletter. It will tall what music is new, what is downloaded and listened to most from their site. A couple years ago when Burger King ran a promotion were you got a free download with each whopper, and McDonalds and it's Big Mac, they were iTunes downloads. They also have a weekly newsletter. Between the 2 of them I can see what is new and upcoming, so I can decide, by listening to a clip of their music, whether they are worth listening to or not.

I hadn't thought about using wikipedia that way! I wish I had, so that I could have included it in this article: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/179810/how_to_discover_great_new_music.html. I do most of my wandering at emusic.com where I have an account. Movies and video games are also a great source for samples of new artists.

www.garageband.com Is an excellent website for new music. A few bands I suggest you start with are Portal and Graphite Symphony. As for "stumbling" across other music, goto your favorite band(s)'s website, and behold. Because of visiting Porcupine Tree's website, I found Steven Wilson's current listening albums, as well as some of the influential music they were inspired by. Now, I'm really digging bands I'd never of heard of otherwise like Anathema and Opeth. Along with those two bands, there's many other good bands that I've found just by doing this. As another example, on Dream Theater's website, they list the side projects each band member is involved with. By means of this, I've found more bands than I ever dreamed of that share the same musical vision I do. From there, you can check others, and you'll never be bored with your music.
