Women:do you drive stick shift or automatic?

stick shift - car with stick shift

My father in law was shocked when he had to park my car and discovered it was a stick shift, he thought that women didn't know how. But really, I only know of a few women, mostly older ones that do drive stick shift (some people call it a 5 speed, not sure what other countries call it). I prefer to drive a stick shift, I feel like I can control the car better. But it was hard finding a new car that wasn't an automatic, there were only a few on the lot! So how about you, can you drive a stick shift? Or is my evil father in law right, most women can't drive a stick?

Your 'evil father in law" is odd, I can't see what difference being a woman causes that would mean we can't drive stick shift. That being said, I can't drive stick very well. I have trouble changing gears and have to pay a lot of attention. But my best friend could only drive stick for the longest time, and she ended up having to teach her boyfriend, who couldn't. So it goes both ways.

That's not really true. Back home the cars are mostly shift. There aren't many automatic and they have to be ordered specially if the person does want automatic. So I learned on shift and when I was there always drove shift. I noticed that here in north america most cars are automatic and most people drive automatic, men and women. I have seen quite a few men that had no idea how to drive a shift car. I guess it's what is more usually on the country, but there are many countries that still have more cars that are not automatic. Women can drive anything, the same as man:) Personally I tried both and I also like shift more.

Most of the men I know drive stick, but could be because a lot of sporty cars are stick. It's like a macho thing to some, one guy I knew had his automatic car converted into stick!

I don't know about most women, but I never learned this skill. It would have been more convenient at times to know how to drive a stick, like when that was the only kind of car available to drive, but I have gotten by okay. Recently my husband bought a truck that is stick shift, and I might just finally learn so I can drive the truck. Or, I might not. Not sure.

I wish more people would know, I used to hate it back in the day when I wanted a break on road trips and I was the only one that knew how to drive my car!

i know a lot of women who can drive stick. but i, personally, never learned. i can only drive automatic, and my friends here in europe sometimes make fun of me because of it. i would love to learn though because i guess it would be useful, but im not planning on having a car anytime in the near future anyway.

My car is an automatic. When I was deciding on my first car my dad wanted me to get a stick so he tried teaching me to drive his stickshift and that was a crash and burn. He told me everything at once and expected me to just do it and I got so frustrated that I just gave up. I probably wouldn't be able to do it anyways because I multitask like crazy. Between smoking, talking on the phone, and driving I wouldn't know where to add shifting gears in.

Everyone should learn to drive a stick shift. I learned how to drive with one and my Mom will drive nothing but a stick, probably because her dad was a race car driver back in the 40's in Detroit...he founded Motor City Speedway. My oldest son was taught to drive a stick and I will teach my other two kids as well. It may be a dying art, but one worth the time and effort.

I made my license with an automatic but later learned to drive a stick. I now have an automatic but really would prefer a stick. You can control the car much better with a stick. Sometimes you need to down shirt to get more power and the automatic won't automatically do it... they're too slow to respond sometimes. Nothing like some nice tunes on a kicking car stereo system, a mocha in the drink holder and you in a car on a windy road and no cops in sight.

ant to learn to drive now that I live in a city with bad bus service, However, none of my friends drive automatics and itsjust so much easier learning on one, My daughter says that standard cars use significantly less gas than do automatics. At least that isher reason for owning one. She bought a brand new one just 3 weeksago, and the standard as $300 cheaper that the automatic with the exact same add ons

I learned how to drive in a stick shift. My dad won't buy a truck that is automatic, and all of his kids learned how to drive in one of the old trucks, before we were ever allowed to drive in Mom's automatic car. I don't drive a stick shift anymore. My last car before this one was a 2003 Cavalier that was a stick. I loved it. The only reason I don't still drive it is because we wanted one with 4 doors for when we had the baby. We sold it to my sister, though, so I still drive it when I'm home, or when she comes up here to visit. I had a hard time adjusting to this car, too. When my husband and I got married, I had the Cavalier, and he had an 03 Dodge Ram that was also a stick. I hated driving the truck because it was huge, but it was still a stick, so when we went to the Malibu Maxx that we have now (We traded in the Ram), it was really hard for both of us. We were always kicking around trying to find the clutch. Then we brought up my husband's first truck that has been rolled a few times, so we could have a second car, and it's also an automatic. So now we are both totally used to them.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that searches for a clutch lol. I've had to drive a few and I felt so stupid, my friends laughed because I said "driving an automatic is hard!"

Women can definitely drive stick shifts! lol Evil father in law...haha I'm not very good at driving one because I don't have one, so I just never really needed to, but I can do it if I have to. I've only driven one a few times, so I'm not the greatest at it, but I can do it. My mom drove a stick shift for years, and one of my really good female friends in college will only drive a stick cause she loves it. lol

I drive auto, but it has nothing to do with being a woman its just because i don't know anyone who has a stick that I could learn from. I think its silly to assume that a person couldn't drive a certain car becauseof their gender. LOL

At the moment I drive an automatic. Finding the right used car for us was hard enough without adding 'prefer standard' to the list I had. But I do prefer standard. My mother insisted that I learn to drive stick before I learned to drive an automatic and I think that's a very logical approach.

I can drive a stick shift, but I definitely prefer an automatic when I have a choice. I always seem to be the one that makes the car die right in the middle of an intersection! :)

I drove stick and I LOVED IT!! It gives you so much more control over the power of the car...it's a great experience. Now I drive an automatic because traffic in this area is just too much to handle. I learned how to drive stick after I got married - my husband taught me, and i'm so grateful that he did. your fil is crazy, there are lots of women who know how to drive 5 speeds

I love driving stick too, I always hop on freeways so it doesn't get too crazy with the traffic.

I drive a stick shift!!! My daddy made me learn in case I was ever in a situation where I had to drive someone else's car home if I was the DD... and they had a stick. I think they are a whole lot more fun to drive!!! I love controlling the acceleration. Plus... when people ask if they can drive my car... 3/4 of them can't drive a stick! great excuse eh?

lol that is a great excuse, except for sometimes it sucks if you don't want to be the dd and no one can drive your car lol. I used to be the only friend with a car, so I was screwed in that aspect ;)

Until about a week ago i wasn't aware that so many people couldn't use a gear stick in America. We have to learn to drive using a stick because most cars are still manual, we have had Automatics for donkeys years but for some reason they have never become all the popular. maybe one day i will have to try an automatic, although not sure i would like it, i've got used to driving manually

I can drive a stick shift, but the car I drive at the moment is an automatic. I learned to drive a stick shift when we were newlyweds and we bought our first car, it was a Honda Accord that was stick.

I was taught in a stick shift. This is what I wanted because then it wouldn't matter what car I had. At the moment I am driving an automatic though.

I can drive both the manual and automatic...automatic is easy but i prefer the manual is much nicer coz you get know how to synchronize your gears with your drift.
