There are special channels for sports! Why do they still pre-empt our programs?

My husband and I are totally non-sports people. We don't play any sports, and we don't watch sports on TV. It totally annoys us that there comes a time every now and then when we sit down to watch our favorite program, and instead of our program we find out there is baseball, or football or hockey. The absolute worst is March Madness basketball which is on day and night, pre-empting our programs, including my husband's beloved news and weather.
There are special channels for sports!! Why do they still insist on taking over our other programs? It's NOT RIGHT.

I totally agree with you. I really get mad when something the sports nuts can watch is available on another channel but what I want to watch I either have wait for days to see or even not at all.

Because channels wants ratings and it's easy to pander to stupid people by showing them sports and crap like reality TV shows or real-life courtroom/hospital/crime dramas.

I wasn't trying to change your mind. I guess we are fortunate because no matter what time a game or sports event goes off our local channels always have the local news and weather afterwards also we have on our fox station a 9:00pm news that we can switch back and forth too.

Sports nuts are typically the ones who need to have a way to view two channels at the same time. Along with soap nuts. I'm sorry. I'm just not totally into TV. Even if I miss my one favorite show...I know it will always come back with repeats eventually or I can catch it somewhere online.

Well now, take a look at my name... lol... can you guess what my answer is going to be? *wink*
Really though, for many, many years I only had local tv and no cable or dish. I would get so angry that they wouldn't offer any hockey games except the final playoffs each year simply because it was carried by a sports channel. So for me it was just the opposite, I would complain that just because they have sports channels doesn't mean everyone has access to them. Sure it's my choice to buy cable/dish or not but to be honest for a long time it just wasn't a priority in my things needed on my income! So my take was the same as yours, except completely opposite! LOL
So I guess they keep everyone happy and put some sports on and some regular viewing, to keep everyone smiling! If you put it into perspective, the few hours a day a channel carries sports is probably very minimal.

ROFLMAO, I already guessed what you were going to say. It's probably true that the amount of time a channel carries special sports is minimal but I think when March Madness Basketball pre-empts even the NEWS and WEATHER, it's going a bit far. It's not that I enjoy the news and weather, but my husband lives for that stuff, LOL. I sure don't like it when they take off House or some other programs, others I rarely watch, but I do think that even though it's not my preferred programming, news and weather is somewhat important to society. Bad choice for pre-empting, in my opinion on that one.
I hope neither you nor anyone takes real offense at this or any other discussion on myLot. After all, we are here to discuss and debate, right? If everyone felt the same about everything in life, the world would be dull.

I love sports- both playing and watching! I only watch professional sports- not college level (March Madness)- It doesn’t irritate me though when they show it day and night- The reason they show the sports games on local TV stations is because not everyone gets the “special sports stations” ESPN, ESPN2, NFL Network, TNT (a lot of basketball is on this one). If people don’t pay for cable and only have NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox- they would not be able to see these games- Plus these local stations pay a lot of money to the NBA, NFL, NHL, etc. to broadcast the shows- When the finals, championships, superbowl, playoffs, March Madness is on- most people watch them and this means a lot more cash for the local stations- I know personally I get mad as hel! When my football team is on the NFL network- I pay good money for digital cable and NFL Network is only through Dish TV. So I have to say that I’m glad that the local stations pick up sports and they don’t only show games on the Special Sports stations!

If sports nuts don't get the sports channels, then its not available on the dark side of their home planet or they can't afford it or they are too cheap. Probably their friends or relatives get it, though. The reason people watch March Madness or any other blitz on the local and networks is because it's cheaper for them and there is nothing else on.
