Golf Newbie questions

Please keep in mind that I do not play golf at all and am actually trying to understand this...Why are almost all golf tournaments called "Classic"s even if it is the first time it has been played? Is that a level like Masters ? What are the different categories or skill levels in golf? How do you determine a handicap?
