I've been with the same client for about 8 months and I'm on a contract. I'm about to find this afternoon when it expires but I know it was a 6 month one. My question is this: If I'm on a contract with this client, does that mean I'm a "slave" to them for that period of time and can't take another job with another company, say a direct employer? I'm bored at this job ... really bored!

that would entirely depend on your contract. if you have a copy, better review it.
some employers actually apply bonds for you to avoid involvement in other companies. you get penalized for that involvement.
some companies, on the other hand, don't mind if you're involved with other companies. as long as its not in the same industry.
