Could you fire someone if you had to?

If push came to shove and I was in that position I don't know how well I would be able to do it. I can't imagine telling someone they no longer had a job, unless it was someone that didn't need it, or didn't care. But for someone that had a family or whatever and needed that job to support them, I have no idea if I could actually go through with it. What about you? Have you ever fired someone? Could you do it?

I could do it but i'd make sure i have a good reason for it and not just do it on a whim.

I've fired a few people as a manager. If you fire them for good reason then there's nothing to feel bad about. It was their decision to mess up and firing them isn't anything personal, it's just business. It doesn't mean they're a bad, worthless person, just that they need to do better in their next job or perhaps they should seek employment in a different area. I refuse to fire anyone without just cause that I believe in. In business you can't afford to be too soft hearted and hold onto employees that you shouldn't. You need people that will do their honest best, know their job, always be willing to learn, etc. If someone isn't doing all of this then you need to fire them to make room for an employee that will.

If it was my job to hire and fire people- then I could. Otherwise I might be fired for not doing my job- It would stink- but it wouldn’t be personal- just business. Hopefully there would be a good reason in the firing- So yes I could- I’d feel terrible but if it was my job I’d do it.

As a boss you will be faced with such decisions the best way to handle it is to ensure that you have given the person enough chances. I have the power to fire but I am also aware that it is the people that make a business so, a good manager/boss will first and foremost talk to the person in order to warn him or her that the job is suffering and that there are things that need to be improved - I never tell someone that he/she will be fired if he/she does not deliver instead I tell him or her that I am sure he or she can do the job and come through... If nothing works, even after all the warnings then a manager/boss is hired for a reason and unfortunately firing is part of it - even if it is bad, if you have done your job by first working with the person, I think you would feel you did your best - I do. PS - I have never had to fire someone, they always came through and worked up to my faith in them.

I managed a business and have had to fire people. It is not something I liked doing but sometimes you have no choice. You have to look at what is going on and do what you think is best.
