Yes Gissi does in his own way
As you know he is only little but if he thinks I am in Danger he will sit in front of me and growl
Before I left Doncaster the Boiler had to be repaired and I don't know why but Gissi did not trust the Guy he sat in front of me and watched the Guy, if I went in the Kitchen he would follow me and then sit by the Kitchen Door and watch the Guy
It amazes me as he is so small but he is very protective

Jake is a 14 year old German Shorthair Pointer who is spoiled rotten and would protect me if a stranger attacked. He is almost at the end of his years and has started some strange behaviors and is sleeping a lot more though. I'll definitely miss him when he's gone.

awwwww i bet you will miss him. For the first 16 years of my life I lived with a golden labrador and she acted like both a friend and a guard dog, a constant companion

I think lots of dogs have a tendancy to do this. I had a dog that was overprotective at times. He too was a lab, well mostly. He was the dog in my avatar but he has since passed on. But anyway, when my boyfriend would try to hug or kiss me, that dog would jump up on him as if to say "leave her alone, she is mine". I thought it was very funny but my boyfriend didn't think so

OMG... my lab is soooo protective when men come around. Anyone male is immediately targeted for a huge growl, bark and jumping. And he will NOT leave my side when anyone of the male species visits here! LOL

We have a labrador also (in fact she just had puppies) and I am unsure if it is because she is being protective of her puppies or what it is but ever since then she has been charging people if they come near our property, one person she ran up into a minivan, I don't like this is at all, she seems very threatening to people and we have already had one complaint (from the woman she chased on the van), I am very careful when I take her out, she can't be trusted at all right now, I think she is too protective.

My dogs are very protective, too. I have a terrier mix that won't let anyone near my baby without her permission. Now that he's walking, she's a little more lenient, but when he was a baby, watch out!! She never actually bit anyone, but she did chase our neighbor down into the basement when he tried to pick my son up out of the play yard when he was about 3 months old. Imagine a little 17 lb dog chasing a full grown military man down into the basement! LOL
Our lab mix isn't nearly as protective of the baby as the terrier is, but she doesn't really want any man besides my husband in our house period. If we tell her it's okay, she will allow it, but she won't sleep until they leave (unless it's one of our dads, since they stay a few days at a time when they are here).

what a lovely picture, thank you for sharing. It certainly seems the smaller the dog, the more defensive they become

I don't currently have a dog, and I used to have a border collie who seemed to take a liking to me more than my wife - I don't know why because I wasn't in very much, but she would never protect me I don't think - more like look on in interest if I was being "attacked" by the wife or kids. LOL.
My mum's dog was different again. This was a little poodle who thought she was an alsation. She would protect my mum against all of us with a throaty growl that sounded more like a miniature siren.. like oooooooorrrrrhhhh.. She had a nasty nip too if you didn't take the warning too seriously. As she got older though and lost her teeth we would often tease her for the worst we would get in return was a very nasty suck.. LOL.

So far everyone responding has dogs as being protective...cats can do that too...I had one cat, named Twinkie...at the time we had other cats as well, and if strangers came in, or someone say like our super to make repairs in the apartment the other cats would run and hide..but oh, no, not Twinkie...it was almost like she was the official supervisor, and would follow the person around making sure nothing wrong was going on, and would sit and stare at the person making the repairs..of course, making that person a nervous wreck..LOL
