In order to halt the thefs at a ATTALLA, Ala. Walmart a local judge ordered 2 shoplifters to stand outside the walmart store wearing signs that say- I am a theif I stole from walmart-they had to wear then for 2 saturdays in a row for four hours to avoid jail time. some people seeing this commented that they thought it was cruel, I think ts a good idea maby people seeing this will think twice about stealing next time. what do you think good idea or no?

I think it's a great punishment and I agree maybe people will begin to think twice before stealing anything. Of course there wil be some who think it's cruel but i don't see it that way.

I don't think its a bad idea at all the judge probably has sent had to send and resent the same group of people to jail and is now trying a new approach as most people don't like to be seen for who they really a I think he will think twice next time

Did you ever read the classic "Scarlet Letter"? Its about a woman that was guilty of adultery and was forced to wera a red letter "A" signifying this. Anyhow I feel this is a form of cruel punishment. I don't even think it fits in the category of civic help as a sentence. Send them to jail I say and thats that. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

What an inovative way to chgange people , not only it cause an embarresment for the boys and tends them to change but it also , creates a fear of embaressment for the future shop-lifters , great going..

I think it's a great idea! More people should have to do that. Just yestarday we saw three cop cars outside of walmart, and saw them escort a handcuffed individual into the back of the car, and then when we left the store that guy was taken away and they were questioning some lady about shoplifting, she kept saying " it wasn't LIKE THAT!!" lol, but she wasn't handcuffed yet. I don't think that's cruel at all, I think it's a good punishment, and it should happen more often!

The authorities or the judges nowadays come up with such a good, creative and innovative ideas to make others aware of the crimes being committed and also warning those people who are planning to do the same things. I think its a good idea where the guilty is being made to feel much more guilty in the public place than he would have been in the jail. Within the prison premises everyone is guilty of something, so it doesn't bother much, but this does. Cheers to the decision taken by the judge!!!!!!

I have seen small stores around here do this and let me say, it works like a charm. Instead of the police arresting them, they strike up a deal that the person caught has to stand in front of the store for four to six hours with a sign on them. In exchange for wearing the sign they are not charged with anything but you know they are going to think twice about doing it again.

I think this was an excellent idea . I bet you these two thiefs will stop and think before they take something that does not belong to them the next time and the way to prevent something from happening a second time is to do something that will make the person stop and think of their actions the next time they set out to do something . If thiefs were caught early on and shown what the consequences would be for their actions there would not be so much crime today .

That is a great idea except they shopuld have to wear it everytime they go out shopping that way the stores will know who to watch adn who not to watch.

i just read this in todays newspaper..gud u started the discussion so soon! that really fast of u and i really appretiate tht! i feel the idea is very novell and one of the best way to punish the culprits becoz this way it would definetly hurt their ego's and would think twice before doing it again. I feel its way ahead of financial punishments or putting behind bars and could be taken up by other countries too!! cheeeerrrss!

I think it's great too but 4 hours at a time isn't long enough. They should have to stand out there for at least 6 hours or however long a shift working there is and do it for a full 2 weeks (14 days). Just 2 Saturdays is like them saying they are sorry and won't do it again.
