Does anyone use the Wii as an exercise form?

I have heard that the Nintendo Wii can be a great source of exercise and that sounds like someting I could get into. I used to love the old super nintendo and the power pad. We would spend hours as a family playing some olympics game and I would work up a good sweat. The Wii has lots of sports games that look like they could be a fun work out that might pass some time faster. Anyone out there has any experience with this?

The Wii is not only fun but good at getting you moving. It comes with Wii Sports and there is several games that can get you going. There is even a fitness part of the game. With the Wii games you are moving in one form or another.

Great. I think I will buy one soon. I think it would be great to exercise and not really know I am. It is hard to hit the 30 minutes on the cardio machine. I think if there were a game involved it would lost track of time and get more done. Thanks for your help.

You can truly get absorbed in the games and get a workout.

When we went to Disneyland a few years back there was this boxing game in the ESPN Zone. I was boxing in air and it would pick up my movements. I was not even able to finish out my coin. I got to like the 3rd round and I could not lift my arms and dodge anymmore. That is what I am picturing the wii boxing game to be like and that is why I think I would love it. Plus it is a lot cheaper then going to Disneyland to play games.

Yes.It is definitely a lot cheaper. The WII is a really fun concept and the boxing game is very similar to the one you mentioned.

I haven't had a chance to buy this system yet, but there is a stand for it right across from a ride I manage at Six Flags. I see people moving around playing the games all the time. I wouldn't say it's the most effective form of working out, but it's much better then just sitting on the ground and playing any other game. The tennis game for example does seem to get the body moving, and any movement is good for you, and does burn calories. I wouldn't replace working out entirely, but you have the right idea....it's also good family fun. :) Let us know how it works out.

I definately will let every one know how it works. I am super excited. We will be getting it in a few weeks when we have some extra money. We are setting some aside each week so it wont break the bank.

I have gone on a number of occassion to by the Nintendo Wii but it is always sold out. Tonight as I was reading your discussion I thought I should put my name on a waiting list. I'm sure the stores must do that kind of thing. I saw on CNN a couple of weeks ago that the stores can't keep up to the demand of the Nintendo Wii came and that soon companies will be rushing out there versions of this to compete in the market. I am waiting for the Nintendo. My husband and I always are buying it for the purpose of exercise instead of sitting around watching tv this will be a fun activity to do at home!

I know it is a long way off but if we have not found one by october thwn we will hop on the waiting list and get one for the family for christmas.

We have a Wii. We play Wii sports often and it isn't really what I would consider a workout, its fun and much better than being on a couch! I did notice the first few times we used it my arms were sore! It's fun though, but most of the other games don't require you to be up, you can just sit down and play. There is also Mii play (i think thats what it's called) and its similar to wii sports and you pretty much have to be up for that one. Good luck. The Wii is alot of fun. We all enjoy it.

I was thinking it would be a fun fammily activity thaty isnt keeping us zoned out stuck to the TV. It would be great to start our kids lives out with sports and family activities instead of the pattern kids are taking now. It takes effort to keep in shape and I want my kids to live active lives and not have to worry about it. Im really excited for the wii.

There are several websites that have written about using Wii Sports as a weight loss exercise program. The one I remember at this moment is wiihealthy.com that lists estimated calories burned, which would vary from actual depending on your weight and how actively you play the games. The boxing in particular can really be active. Most of the sites state playing 30 to 45 minutes a day.
