Is a Longer life a Better life?

Do you really want to live 30 years longer? Our life expectancies in Australia have increased from an average of 55.2 for males and 58.8 in the first decade of the 20th century, to 78.1 for males and 83.0 for females in 2002 to 2004. We now have the opportunity to watch our children grow up, retire from work and have 30 years after that to tend to our garden's vege patch, among other things. This week, a team of scientists in California announced that they have identified a gene that may increase our lifespan by up to 30 years. "Thirty more years? Is that a promise or a sentence?" I suggests that in today's frenzied society, few would be want to be on this planet any longer than we have to. There are also practical considerations of course. If living longer only improves our quantity, by not our quality, of life, would there be much point extending our lives? Would we even be able to afford paying for our extra years on earth with the cost of living increasing all the time? Would such a genetic manipulation only be available to those who can afford it, thus creating a great divide between the haves, who would live longer lives, and the have nots, who would live shorter lives? Would the lengthening of people's lives add more strain to the planet and its finite resources?

Oh yes I think that we do have a better life and a better chance of a healthier life now and it is lovely to be able to see our children grow up and start there own families before we depart from our own life. But if we have poor health then I do think that it is best for all of our famlies to let go and die in peace. And you are right that the cost of living in this world is very expensive and it would put more pressure on the planet.

the quality of life counts most.what is the use if you are still alive and can't use your wisdom to help other people. i would like to live my life to the fullest by doing everything i want to do.maybe the best way to live a longer life is to establish our relationship with ourselves than to others because in that way we can have a better way of relating to other people and making the world a little better.

Of course everyone wants to live longer lives. Who wouldn’t? We all want to be around to enjoy our kids, our grandkids, and maybe even or great grandkids, among other things. and a new scientific breakthrough which may add extra years to human life. Some people might think that it would have been good if Napoleon or Stalin or Mao lived longer lives. Of course others might wish that a longer life was available to a Mother Teresa or a Gandhi. Character and quality of life, in other words, is part of what needs to be addressed here, not just mere length of life.

Longer life is a better life if you lead it in a better way. Because even a shorter life lead with problems and bad things is a dirty life. Live good until you live. I like to lead a better life. Hope you come up with the thing.
