In Vodou there is the Lwa which is the spirit world on a basic level.....These are the spirits that oversee life/people on both a grand scale as well as an intimate one etc etc kind of like Angels I guess you could say....So the next couple threads I post will be about the Lwa but keep in mind it is impossibel to know ALL the Lwa simply because they are far too many and over time some of the much older ones are dropped from the list so to speak in order to allow new ones to enter that stage of "life"...
One thing I really relate to when it comes to the Lwa is the fact that the Lwa is in everything...its very much like my Buddhist and Native Am beliefs that we are all one and everything is connected...this DOESNT mean for example that the Lwa IS the tree, animal, rock etc it just means that they are part of them, connected to them just like we (the living) are...sorry kinda hard to explain...
There are many different classes I guess you could say when it comes to the Lwa - you have the highest of all which is the Great Lwa:
Danbala & Ayida-Wedo
(Rada) = Papa Legba - (Petro) = Kalfou
(Rada) = Ezili Freda - (Petro) = Ezili Danto
Ogou
(Rada) = Agwe - (Petro) = Agwe la Flambeau
(Rada) = Lasiren - (Petro) = Labalenn
(Rada is the gentle aspect Petro is aggressive aspect)
Then you have the Gede which is the family of the Lwa of Death....Their job is to basically oversee death and all that is associated with it..they are also great healers and are the protectors of children...One thing I relly love about the Lwa of Death is the fact that they make light of dying....which makes perfect sense to me..you cant avoid it or stop it so why not have fun with it ya know....
the major Lwa of Death are
Baron Samedi
Baron Cimetie
Baron Crois
Maman Brijit
then you have the numerous other Lwa which ranges from famous ppl in history as well as goverment ppl (like presidents which is a scarey thought really LOL) down to our personal Lwa which would be our family members/ancestors etc who've passed before us...Some would say however that not everyone who dies is granted Lwa status but WHO is granted it or rather is entitled to it most likely varies from person to person and maybe even country to country..
any questions? anything to add? I need coffee then I'll get on to Lwa part 2 which will start with the Great Lwa and their purpose etc....

I don't know about any of these things you are talking about, I just wanted to say Hi, have a great day! I do burn candles to take some negative energy away and to make me lucky. I just send someone from Mylot some lucky oil. It works like magic.

This is interesting! I'll have to go dig up the rest of this after I get home from work (which I need to leave for now but am still online instead). =p
You know, when I was a kid I knew some people who practiced vodou, including a family member of mine. But I rather forgot about it until much later when I read William Gibson's books, which involved a sort of cyberspace voodoo thing. And now I'm curious again, not so much in terms of for my own practice, but for knowledge, which I have a insatiable hunger for. Tonight or tomorrow when I have time I'll make sure to go look at your other vodou posts!

Very nice post about good information written in a proximal language :). I am very interested on Lwas, I can't wait for the next post. I have a lot of questions, but perhaps they are difficult or not in your plans... Are the Lwas somehow related to christian saints, as in Brazil and Cuba? Is Ezili a new Lwa added as you explained, or does she come from Africa? I have heard Cuban Ogun is Vodou's Ogou, is Ezili Danto Ogou related to this? Is this Lwa male or female?...

LOL so many questions...but its early for me and I've not made my coffee yet so you'll have to wait..however just so you know, the lwa DO have similar characteristics to some Catholic Saints BUT they are not associated with them other than the similarities in their purpose....did that even make any flipping sense at all LOL I shouldnt try to functionbefore coffee...

I have many more questions so take your coffe with calm :) ... You have clarified one of my questions: so there is no synchretism in vodou, at least in the Cuban and Brazilian sense. But I guess there is another way of sychretism (if someone here doesn't know, that means blending religions), perhaps in the introduction of new Lwas that could come from a Western tradition, such as I think Lasiren (the mermaid) is... am I right?

Mmmm I forgot one more question: Vodou religion comes mainly from Dahomey, as Cuban Arara religion (and some say Brazilian Candomble, Ouganda and Macumba). In Arara, the most important Loas or Foldunes (Lwa or Vodoun) are Nana Buruku and Babalu Aye/Dasoyi. Are they present in vodou? Perhaps with a deformed spelling?

Nope not at all...in fact I've never been initiated into any of the paths I walk and I personally have never felt its necessary - IN FACT I personally recommend AGAINST it...the path I walk is my own and between me and the spirits/higher powers etc etc so really nobody has the true authority to initiate me into anything...I am all about avoiding incorperating other ppl into my spiritual life ya know. Reason being, I dont care for the conflict - "she says do it this way", "he says do it that way", "you MUST do it such and such a way" - I do it MY way and thats the way I've been guided to do things if that makes sense and as far as Im concerned thats as it should be..keep in mind though, pretty much everything I do in life is unorthodoxed....

well ravenlady, a lot of what is written in books on vodou is false. And vodou is not a solitary religion, but a community one. I'm not initiated either, but felt that a lot of what you said was false (sorry). I'm on another message board which has a lot more accurate info on the religion.
