I like the look of long nails, but I started keeping them short when I had my first baby, and was worried about scratching her. I noticed it was way easier to put my contact lenses in and do other things around the house, so I've kept them short ever since. I can't imagine how they'd cause diseases, unless one broke and left you with a cut, or you scratched yourself. But you can get cuts other ways, so I'm not sure what your parents are worried about.

It is ok to have long nails...If you have a very good hygiene. Long nails, especially for children should be a big "NO"! For they always play their hands into a lot of things. Refrain from touching and using your nails. "Protect them" in the real sense! Clean em regularly. If they are beautiful and you want to have it, take the pains.. No scratching! No itching! Prefer eating food with spoons n forks. For, at most times, nails are where contamination begins. Even while typing, take care not to touch too much... otherwise make sure, the keyboard is disinfected. Coming to disinfection, it also depends upon how clean your environment is. Be extra careful at public places... It will be really difficult in the beginning. But once you get used to it, voila! You can have your long nails without much fear of getting infected!

I think long nails are not a problem till they are maintained well. You need to keep them smooth and on it neat and clean. I too had a habit of keeping long nails but soon after marriage i trimmed them as they left scars on my husbands body on several occasions. This was one disadvantage of long nails which i came to know after marriage.

I don't agree that long nails are a health problem and cause diseases. If you treat your nails in the correct way and soak them a couple of times a week even, then they will be clean and unlikely to pick up any disease. Mine are medium length. I can't grow them any longer but I admire people who can. They can become an asset, rather than just another feature. If your Mum and Dad dislike your nails so much, sit down and talk with them about it. Explain to them how you care for your nails and keep them clean... you're old enough to make your own choices at 23. Brightest Blessings.
