What a great job to have. I have been a Firefighter for the last seventeen years . I dont think there is a better or more satisfying job around.. I work at a station with twelve other guys and it is truly a brotherhood.. We spend 24 hours at a time at the firehouse and 48 hours off That is a great schedule.. I'll start posting some fire calls and events of the shift in this discusion so you can see how firefighters in Mississippi live..

I am really looking forward to your posts and discussions. I don't mean to sound flippant and hope you don't take this that way; but you are the first one that I have come across to ask this question to and it's one that I have a wager with a friend on. Many years ago I was married to a volunteer fireman so I know a little bit of the life. I am betting that on Tuesday nights at 10:00 if nothing is going on and you are on duty, you are all sitting around and watching Denis Leary on Rescue Me. Am I right or am I wrong? ~Donna

It's good to finally see a firefighting discussion! I was volunteer firefighter (wildland) for 9 years, and loved every minute of it. Is it dangerous, yeah; is it unpredictable, yeah, do ya have to love it to be one, you bet. I worked with a great group of guys, along with the forestry guys, I was the only female firefighter in my department. And yep, there were a few times I had to 'prove' myself, but I did and I earned the respect of our Chief, and was 2nd in Command for 4 years. Look forward to seeing your discussions. Those of us who go up against a wall of fire, that can change direction at a moment's notice, have great respect for those who rush into a burning structure. At one time I was the training officer for all the Volunteer FD in my county.. Doing that and working my shift got old after a while and I gave it up.. No wildland firefighting for me.. I do not like it.

Firefighters are awesome!!! My son was one for 14 years..after he donated 1/2 his liver to his dad to save his life, he still got back in shape and re-tested and got his job back ( he did desk duty for 1 year in between)..but having almost lost his life in the surgical process, he decided to retire from firefighting and has gone on to work in the movie industry and now owns his own construction business..All of his firefighter buddies are great guys... I have a huge respect for all of you and all you do!!!!

Thank you - thank you
Hello, fellow Mississippian. Actually I don't live there any longer but went to high coast on the coast and then college in Hattiesburg. Firefighting is a very noble profession. Caring enough for others to put your own life at risk in order to save another.... thank you for all that you all do. I look forward to your future discussions.

I have more respect for firefighters than anyone else. Where you read about corruption in other service sectors I cant remember once for firemen. They truely put their life on the line everytime they go out on a call. Thanks.

firefighting is a noble profession. A firefighter risks his or her life in order to save others'. In my country, firefighters do not get much adulation that they rightfully deserve. Not yet, anyway. I have been in the fire department for the last seven years and although I don't do actual firefighting because I do admin tasks, I really offer a prayer for my colleagues everytime they respond to a fire alarm because I know that everytime they hop on board the firetruck, there's always danger lurking around the corner. I salute all firefighters around the world.

I am a firefighter in Virginia. Where in Mississippi do you run your calls and how many do you run? What apparatus does your station contain?

that is a wonderful idea. we do at times take all that you guys do sort of forgranted instead of giving praise where praise is due. I can imagine it is a very satisfying job as you are helping others all the time. Iused to work as a nurses aid and that was the thing the satisfaction of doing something that would help other people. It should be really interesting to hear some of the events of your life as a firefighter.
