Do you ever use your slow cooker?

I love mine and have made a lot of different things in it... I find it especially valuable when I have to work or am going to have a busy day as you just put it in and leave it! What are some things that you like to make in your slow cooker? How often do you use your slow cooker?

The Chili sounds great Texas!! I absolutely love mine too, especially on days when I have to work late. I don't know how I lived without one prior to my marriage! LOL

I used to put the whole meal in the slow cooker but we found the potatoes turn black in parts and my kids didn't like that. So usually I just do meat in the Crock Pot. My favourite is pork roast in apple juice. I think I use the slow cooker once a month. I don't make meals every night because of the schedules in this house. When I do make a meal I get frustrated because someone isn't there and another one is late and I throw my hands up in the air saying "Why bother?" I also have to think well in advance if I want to use the slower cooker - like the night before. I have trouble deciding on meals every day. I'll think about it all day long and come dinner time I still won't have decided anything.

This sounds like me some days! LOL It is hard when you are the only one planning and cooking the meals...That is why I like to collect recipies so that I can choose from a variety of meals to prepare. I myself use the slow cooker at least once a week...Stews, different meats (some with the vegetables and some without. I find some meats give carrots an awful flavour in the slow cooker! Potatoes seem to taste better and keep their colour if they are cubed with the skin left on and use a can of mushroom soup in with the meat and potatoes :) Thanks so much for your response! :)

I don't use mine that often, but I like it a lot. My favorite thing to make in it is BBQ sandwiches. Just toss in a pork or pot roast and pour a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce over. Add a drop or two of liquid smoke, set to low for 6 hours or high for 3. The meat will be falling apart when the time is up, so shred with some tongs or two forks and then serve on white bread or hamburger buns. Super easy and simple!

BTW, I just noticed, this discussion got tagged with a "mature content" tag. Weird!

My favorite thing is to put chicken or ribs in a slow cooker with barbeque sauce and let it cook over the course of the day. It is so tender when it is done! Then I make a pot of rice and we feast! So good! The house smells so nice with the chicken and barbecue sauce it just makes you so hungry!

We use our's at least 3 times a week. Chicken is one of our favorite things to cook in there. I like using it with meat because it makes it more tender, everything just falls apart in your mouth, that is if you can even get it to stay on the fork. I recently found a meatloaf recipe for the slowcooker/crockpot. I didn't know if it would taste as good but when all was said and done there was nothing left for leftovers. My children loved it, even the picky 4 year old.

thank you so much for starting this discussion pal , I had forgot all about my slow cooker , I used to use it all the time when I made soup for the church but there is a new law now so we can't keep it hot in the slow cookers at church as we have too keep it on the cooker tops , bit daft but it is the law , I have really used it much for anything else , never know many recipes either lol . so If you don't mind I will wait and have a read at your responses . thanks I have noticed a couple of good recipes already xx

This is what I like to cook using my slow cooker. SLOW-COOKER CHICKEN CACCIATORE Let the slow cooker do the work while chicken stews in this tomato-seasoned broth. 1 3/4 cups Chicken Broth 1 tsp. garlic powder 2 cans (14 1/2 oz. each) diced Italian-style tomatoes 4 cups mushrooms,, cut in half 2 large onions,, chopped 3 lbs. chicken parts,, skin removed 10 cups hot cooked spaghetti,, cooked without salt MIX broth, garlic powder, tomatoes, mushrooms and onions in slow cooker. Add chicken and turn to coat. COVER and cook on LOW 7 to 8 hours* or until done. Serve over spaghetti. *or on HIGH 4 to 5 hr.

I love to make stew or cake in my slow cooker. Making cake is the best. It's like a spoon cake. You just toss in your cake make mix (prepare as directed on the box first) set it to low and wait 6-8 hours. When it's done, it smells great. You can just spoon it out and serve it with ice cream or whipped cream. If you have the type that has a removable ceramic bowl, just spray with bakers joy and then you can turn the cake out when it's done. I love my slow cooker. It really takes care of things for me on Sundays or during the week when I just dont want to have to come home and cook. Also, it's great in the summer. I can start something in the morning and have it ready for dinner without heating up the house.

We honestly can't live without our slow cooker and that is true! We broke our last slow cooker and were getting withdrawal symptoms until we managed to get a new one we liked about a month later! As a matter of fact we have Chicken Chausseur in ours right now for Sunday Lunch - my other favourite is Steak and mushroom casserole! I probably use mine at least once a week and much more in winter - it makes stes and casseroles so much tastier and so tender that the meat just melts in your mouth and it is so easy! Can't wait for lunch and I am very rarely hungry nowadays with all my medications so that is a good thing! xxxx

Hi Transdisc, Thank you for joining the conversation! It has the mature content tag due to "Chicken brea$t" Rediculous, I know, but that is the reality with these food discussions. I too found this confusing when I could not post a recipie and found I had to change it to chicken strips inorder to post...LOL to all these little Mylot things :) Thanks again Trans and also Mummymo for reviving this discussion! :)

I use it, usually to cook chicken, not often though because I am a poor college student who can't really afford meat. My mother uses hers several times a week. She usually just puts in the meat, either chicken or beef and some sauce and leaves it on all day so all she has to do for dinner is put the potatoes in the oven and hour before and heat a can of beans. It's really convenient and healthy because you don't get that really high heat on the meat that can make the edges get burned and have carbon on them. Also much more tender than broiled or grilled. The only thing is that you have to think a little bit about what kind of sauce you use. So many store bought seasoning packages have MSG in them or high fructose corn syrup and other really nasty stuff. As long as your all natural it's amazing.

Thanks DelicateFlower! I often do just do meat in there but sometimes I do put the vegetables in as well...It depends on the type of meat and what I am cooking it all in! I will also make some nice stews and chillies in it! ~Heavens~

Slow cookers are absolutely fabulous. I don't use mine so much now as I used to, but I used to use it at least two or three times a week. On a cold winter's evening when it's already dark when you get home, walking in the front door to the smell of a stew or casserole bubbling away is just wonderful. I used to put my bread machine on the timer too, and have fresh hot bread ready to eat with dinner too. Mmmmm, luxury! My favourite slow cooker recipe is probably a beef casserole using a cheap cut of beef which will be lovely and tender through long cooking, with lots of veggies.

Mmmmm Delicious and warm hot bread too! I'm coming over for dinner tomorrow night! LOL I do love Bread machines as I boarded during college and the woman owned a bread machine and it was great to wake up in the morning to the smell of fresh bread! I only wish I owned one of them! Enjoy your tasty fresh bread! ~Heavens~

You'll be sadly disappointed if you come over this evening. The crock pot is still in the van after we were hauling stuff about. Which reminds me that I really ought to get my act together and get it out!

I haven't used mine for quite some time now, but am going to get it out this evening and maybe get something going in the morning before we leave.. It is so easy to have supper ready when you get home, you can add a store bought salad, some bread and supper is ready.. The last time that I used mine, I made a pot of beef stew, it was so good.. And ready when I got home.. I haven't even thought of the crock pot until I stumbled upon these discussions.. Good going..

LOL I do hope that you enjoyed the stew as I make that in mine often along with roasts and ribs and casseroles etc... I am like you and love to have dinner ready when I arrive home and all in one dish...less dishes! LOL ~Heavens~

I don't use my slow cooker a lot but I do love it. It makes it really easy when I am working and come home and the meal is ready except for me adding a couple of things to the meal. Like maybe some bisquits are something like that. I put the vegetables in the crock pot along with the meat. It sure is nice to get home and have the meal ready.

Yes, it is nice when you can do that! I am often not home until after eight o'clock at night from work and so it makes things so much easier for my husband and I know my son is getting a good meal! Also, ours has a keep warm feature and he can keep whatever is in there warm for me also! ~Heavens~

I love mine too, and should use it more often. I'm glad we 'found' it last summer, during our home renovations. I've made really good stews, and the meat is so tender, and also once did a whole chicken in it. The chicken was the size of a small turkey, and turned out really great. I'll have to branch out, and try some new recipes in it as well.
