What Do You Do While Talking On The Phone?

Do you make hand gestures etc., like you would when talking with someone in person?
Earlier today, I found myself doing just that, and it was quite funny, as of course, the other person couldn't see me. In fact, I was home alone at the time.
Have you ever found yourself doing this, and if so, did you mention it to the person you were talking to at the time?
Do you think these type of things become habits with us, so that we do them without thinking?

I do a lot of things while talking on the phone. And I think sometimes it's so apparent to the caller, especially if he/she is a close friend. They'd eventually end up asking me if I'm doing something. ~~lol I don't know. I just can't be on a steady mode when talking on the phone. Sometimes, I'm even cooking or talking to my daughter.~~lol
And for the gestures, yes, I admit I have this habit too. Because it's so frustrating sometimes, when words seems not enough to express what you really want to convey. Especially if it is for giving directions or a specific location of a thing they are searching for. My siblings used to laugh at me for those gestures. But happily, I don't think it's a bad habit, it's so fun, especially when no one is around.~~lol You are like conducting a great orchestra. ~~lol (^^,)

I tend to do things while on the phone at times too, Aphroditei. Cooking is one of the things I'll often do, or even dishes. My daughter-in-law often puts me on her speaker phone so that she can get some things done too. I don't think the gesturing is a bad habit, and I like the way you describe it too (conducting an orchestra).:) Thanks for sharing this.

Lots of time I caught myself using hand gestures and smiling while on the phone. I guess it is habitual. Sometimes we are unaware that we are doing that because we are trying to get our points across to the other person. But it is silly because the other person wont be able to see it.

You're right, a lot of people including myself, get caught-up in interesting conversations, and don't realize that we're doing this. Thanks for sharing.

If I am sitting down I do . I was giving my daughter in law instructions on how to drive somewher last week and I didn't realize my hands were going in all directions until I noticed my hubby laughing , he said he could understand why Iwas doing that as she obviously couldn't see me lol
I suppose we do a lot of silly things we don't realize we are doing until someone comments on it ,
At least we are amusing someone lol i suppose it will all come in handy when we can get one of those phones where people can see you .
then we will have to be smart dressed at all times lol
xx

That's funny weemam. You're right, a lot of things are done without us realizing that we're doing them. I'm not looking forward to a time when everyone can see me while we're on the phone. I like to be able to be comfortable, and to not have to worry about the way I'm dressed etc. Thanks for your contribution to this topic.

I am the same as you are, i will wave my hands about like i was talking to the person face to face. I dont think about doing it, it just happens and more so when the person on the phone has just delivered bad news.

I agree, as this type of thing can be a habit. I think it can mean that we're very interested about what's being discussed too. Thanks for sharing.

Just yesterday I was on the phone, using my brand new hand-free headset and my hubby started laughing.I was trying hard to figure out what he was laughing about while trying to pay attention to my conversation. He finally just said out loud.. "why are you talking with your hands?". I didn't even realize I was doing it. I guess old habits ARE hard to break lol.

It's a good thing I don't have one of those hand-free sets, or I likely would be doing something similar to you, while wandering around the house at the same time. Thanks for your response.

I walk back and forth , all the while , waving my hands. People have told me that I wear them out just watching me. I really don't know why i do this. But thanks for posting this topic, it's nice to know I'm not completely alone.

I used to walk back and forth too, but not so much anymore. These days, I often raise my voice to match the level of the person's voice I'm talking to, which can be annoying for others listening in. You're definitely not alone in this, and you're welcome.
