Supercat to the rescue

I'd like to share a true story of how my cat Socks saved my girlfriend's life. A couple of years ago i was working late one night in Sydney. It was 1:30 am when I got a call from my very distressed girlfriend. She begins to tell me that she went to bed at about 11:30, only to be woken up an hour later by a very vocal Socks, meeowing and climbing all over her. Thinking he just wasn't satisfied with his earlier meal, she pushed him off and threw a pillow at him. Not detered, Socks kept pestering, getting quite agitated himself. After 10 minutes of being constantly hassled, she got up still half asleep and quite cranky, only to find the lounge room on FIRE! In shock, through the smoke she saw my stereo speaker and the curtains fully ablaze. Jumping into action on a full adrenalin rush she woke the old lady next door, yelling at her to call the fire brigade. She bounded back inside and actually managed to get the fire out using all available doonas & scattered clothes, just as the fire truck arrived. The cause of the fire was an incense burner left alight on top of the speaker (a lesson for all). The end result was complete destruction of the speaker, curtains, carpet, many doonas and severe wall damage. Not to mention the small but painfull burns on her arms and legs. The fireman said another couple of minutes and there would have been no stopping it, and the severity of the smoke would have rendered her unconcious. Socks was hailed as the hero of the night by the fireman, needless to say he was showered with gifts and the finest cat cuisine for many months after. A happy ending thanks to a fluffy hero!

Yes, you definitely have a superhero. That was a very interesting story. I am so glad that your friend and cat were ok and didn't get hurt worse than they did. I do have a question. I live in the hillbilly part of the United States and do not know what a doona is. Can you please explain that to me. Thanks for the great story with a happy ending.

OK, thanks, Kathy, I have learned something today. So you can teach an old dog new tricks. LOL

Wow, somehow I don't think my cat would do that, more like she'd only wake us up to save herself! (we don't have a catflap so we gotta open the door for her!)

Oh Kathy - what a lovely story. Thanks for sharing it. I am glad your friend survived, and it's great that Socks managed to save her. Animals have a "sixth sense" that is way beyond our mere human capabilities. They can feel things that we cannot, and, in this case, he save a life. great story!

That is really awesome.Pets are truelly amazing sometimes.I am so glad that she is o.k.That is great that she spoils her cat.The only time my 2 little kittens wake me up is when they are playing together.I think they use me as a running pad.LOL!As for my dog he hates when I get on ladders. He tries to pull me back down.He also tries to grab my legs when my husband lifts me up.

Oh!! What a Brave and intelligent cat! I also congrats Sock for his intelligence and loyalty. Pets sometimes do really great job to their masters. Your cat is the instance of that. There is another lesson, that we should learn from this incident. We should not ignore our pets, if they are behaving abnormally. As they can not speak so they draw our attention through thier behaviour. We should enquire after the reason if our pets are behaving in a strange way.

Sounds just like the man my Lady needs. She's a bicolor Persian, who has no morals, she'll seduce anything.

Wo kathy what an awesome story pal , I take it that a doona is a downie or continental quilt , What a brilliant cat that persevered until he woke your girl friend up . I have heard of things like this happening but not to someone I knew , Thanks for sharing that pal. your friend was so lucky that she didn't die that night , brilliant and well done Socks. I really think Socks was entitled to be spoiled for a very long time xx

Oh boy, what a story Kathy! Socks realized the danger your friend was in, and thank goodness he was persistent in waking her up before it was too late. Good on ya Socks! You sure have one helluva cat there - do you still have him?

Oh yeah, Socks was the hero that night for sure; and he deserved the best for sure. Ain't it something how she was ready to sleep; well she would have STILL been sleeping. I like that story. And yes, a great lesson.
