Do We Have A Responsibility to Others to be Happy?

If you are feeling down or cranky, do you owe it to others to lift your spirits? I believe that we ought to. To not to do so is selfish in my view. A good mood can be contagious. I am always grateful when a cheerful person lifts my spirits. To work on our own happiness is a way of giving, a way of being kind. What do you think?

I try to be as upbeat and positive as I can, despite feeling really low and depressed on occasions. I take refuge in humour where possible, finding the humour in the worst situations. At least when I can laugh at something, it is better than bringing others down

I couldn't agree more! I sometimes forget to use my sense of humor as a way to raise my spirits and the spirits of those around me. It is so powerful.

I think the very bes thing to do when I am cranky or blue is to pretend otherwise and try to be around people who are not. You know that saying, 'fake it till you make it?' I believe it is very true for moods, as well. And if that doesn't work I'd rather just be alone and work it out myself.

I'm a great believer in the "fake it till you make it" philosophy. When you act happy and cheerful you really do begin to FEEL happy and cheerful.

well i do not owe it to others to lift my spirits up cause i believe happiness should stem from you and not from people. I rarely show my depressed mood when i am with my friends as i know i should be the one to share my happiness with them

I don't agree :) I think the only person you need to be happy for is yourself. Sure it's nice if other people can cheer you up, but I don't see why you have to be happy just for other people. How is it selfish to express your own feelings? If you keep them bottled up and just pretend to be happy all the time then eventually one day you might just lose it! lol I agree that it's a good idea to work on your own happiness 'choose your attitude' is a good motto to live by, but I think you should only be doing it for yourself and not worry so much about pleasing others :)

Yes I do believe that we are responsible to lift up our own spirits. In the bible David says to himself, 'Why be cast down oh my soul?' And cheerfulnnes is very contagious. Just a smile will lift up your spirits and also others spirits. Just look at the beautiful smile of an infant. It is very irrestible isn't it?

Yes, a smile can work wonders! And what you say about infants is so true. We can learn a lot from infants. They marvel at and are so appreciative of the simple things in life.

Well, when I'm feeling down, I can count on my friends. They may try to help me. And when I'm feeling happy, I try to contagious other people. Anyway, I do not blame others when I'm sad. I can only blame myself when something goes wrong. Working on our own happiness is a way of being selfish. That's what I think. Working on other's happiness is a way of being kind. That's just my point of view, though.

Yes, I agree; working on others' happiness is a way of being kind and giving. I also agree that one shouldn't blame others for their own sadness. We are responsible for our own feelings.

We owe it to ourselves to be happy. I think if we are feeling low then we need to be true about it no point covering up how we feel otherwise we are not being real, but in the long run it is important if feel low to go and check it out with the doctor because it could be due to depression and some tablets might be able to sort it out or counselling.
