any advice about the canon 50mm f/1.8 II? is it worth spending the extra cash to get the 50mm f/1.4? does the f/1.8 even last very long without falling apart? I've read reviews where people have had their f/1.8 break or completely fall into peices within a few weeks after purchase. what are your thoughts?

mine works fine! i bought it last month and it takes very sharp images. for its price and performance I think its a must have lens. the parts are plastic like the canon kit lens but as long as you take care of your lens you'll be fine!

thanks for the advice, It's nice to hear some positive news about build of the lens. I've been using the kit lens for about 1 1/2 years and I think it's a great lens. Everyone that reviews the 50mm 1.8 seems to be turned off about the plastic case, no USM, but every review also says the opitical quality is great

I had the 50 f/1.8 mk II. Its got the plastic mount, whereas the f/1.4 version has a metal mount (and a half stop more light). Its not the sturdiest lens in the world, but if your good to it itll be good to you. I ended up selling mine because I hardly used it, but for the 2 years I had mine I had no problems, just tacked a uv filer on the front and I was off and away. Put it this way, if your 50mm breaks, its a lot cheaper to replace a $70 lens. Definately the best, most inexpensive lens on the market today, but if your more concerned with quality, and moneys no option you might be better to step it up.

I rented the two lenses for a few days and really liked the f/1.4 build alot better, but when it came down to optical quality and performance, the f/1.8 seemed much better to me. Thanks for the advice, I think I'll give this lens a try.
