I have a suspicion that from the things my grandmother and told me, that my Celtic great=grandmother was a witch--technically speaking she was "Catholic", but lets face it, in her day you just didn't shout from the roof, Hey I'm a witch..lol...but from all the things told to me she just had to be one..among one of her "traditions" was to have a "kitchen" witch..some kind of figurine or doll in the shape/form of a witch--well, while my grandmother or mother never followed in her footsteps..they were muggles after all --LOL--I obviously have followed the tradition...and yes I have a kitchen witch---thing is I'm not exactly sure the meaning behind it.. I was told it brings good luck. So do you have a kitchen witch in your kitchen??

Hi pyewacket. Well I don't have a kitchen witch as such, but I do have a beautiful Belarussian straw doll, who stands in my kitchen to "keep guard". Sadly I am at work at the moment, so can't produce a photo of her, but to describe her, she is about 8 inches high, and made of flax and straw with a beautifully painted wooden face. In her hands she holds a wooden tray containing bread and salt, which are the traditional Belarussian signs of hospitality. In Belarussian tradition, if the lady lives in your kitchen, you will always have food in plenty, and never have disasters in the kitchen, so I guess in essence she fulfils a similar function to the witches you descibe. She represents health, warmth, hospitality and means that any guest in your house will always be welcome. My dolls name is Elena (after my grandmother) who gave her to me about 30 years ago when I first got a place of my own and left home. I treasure her greatly - I always think if there was ever a fire or disaster in my home, the first thing I would rescue (after checking that my cats are safe of course!) would be Elena:-))

Ok - here is Elena guarding my microwave this morning! Sorry it is a bit dark. Actually, first thing I thought when I saw the photo, was how dirty my kitchen work surfaces are (LOL!) - I obviously spend too much time on Mylot and not enough cleaning!! Making dolls and many other objects from straw is very much an art form in Belarussia. In the old days, most women were taught how to make such things in the same way as they learnt to spin and weave. Sadly - I can't do it, but when I go "home" you can see still some of the older village ladies selling their home-made wares at the roadside.

Elena - Elena in her rightful place now!
OOOPS! Well as you no doubt realise now, I am having a blonde day today (to match my blonde Belarussian hair!), and somehow managed to post Elena's picture in one of your other discussions- about pepsi cola! LOL! I am sorry about that! Anyway - I will try again.

Oh that sounds beautiful..I'm just dying now to see what the straw doll looks like!! Wonderful response...I guess in all various cultures there's something the equivalent of a kitchen witch for protection of hearth and home

LOL that photograph is almost identical to the one I used to have in my old kitchen, she disappeared when I moved into my current house. Currently I don't have a kitchen witch but I do have a Halloween zombie bat hanging in the porch :-)

I have a plaque that my mother gave me when I got married that hangs above the door, it is sort of my good luck charm....it says...The opinions expressed by the husband are not necessarily those of the management.
