She is 12 years old, and it seems the older she gets, the more frightened she is of storms. I have to pet her and keep reasuring her until the storm is over. She actually shakes she is so scared if it's a bad storm. It breaks my heart.

hi there sodapop (57)! happy, my 7-year old japanese spitz is also very frightened of thunderstorms! even the sound of the rain scares her stiff. i keep her inside our bedroom whenever it rains and i let her listen to soft music, mostly classical to calm her. i also hug and talk to her so that she could not hear the sound of the rain. i find this technique effective.

You knoww, I always turned the tv up loud to try to mutt the sounds of thunder, but I think your suggestion of classical music would be a great thing to try! That would be more calming. I'll let you know if it helps after the next storm. Thanks!

There's nothing you can do,except for what you are doing, comfort and reassure her, keep her comfortable until it's passed

That's a good question....I guess it's because the air is so hot during the day and cools down at night

Never reassure a dog when he/she is scared. You are only teaching her/him that it's okay to freak out. My dog (now deceased)was terrified and I ignored him. Eventually he just followed me closesly which was better than having to drag him out from under the lamp table when the storm was over.

I kinda agree, I can't stand by and watch my dog suffer being so scared and not try to do something for her, even if it's just petting her. Maybe I just spoil her to much.

Well you have to divert your dog, thats all you can do. Closing all the doors, make her feel warm..Be beside her,so that she wont be scared..and yeah thats a good idea to switch on the music or tv. The most important thing is never leave her alone, even if the storms are strong and if you are besider your dog..it makes a world of difference :)

I work out of my home, so I am always here with her. And she will find me about 2 hours before the storm starts and starts acting scarred. I can tell how bad the storm is going to be by the way she is reacting.

Hello My dog has seperation anxiety and I give him anxiety herbal stuff from the health food store or a petfood place. I forget the name of it, but it does work..so maybe it will work for thunderstorms too :)

Hello shawna thanks for the suggestion. I just might have to give it a try. I'm sure if I go into a health food store they could point me to the right product. I am willing to try anything to ease my dog. I hate seeing her so scared.

My mom had a problem with of her dogs, a great pyrenees(140 lbs) & we lived in Florida at the time with almost daily thunderstorms. She would go nuts panting, pacing, trying to crawl and hide in places, just ruined the whole house. She got some "downers" from the vet. Then one of my dogs started acting like that during storms(she was older too), would potty in the house, pant, pace, hide, chewed door knobs trying to get outside of all places....I would just comfort her as best I could. Did try the downers as well for when I wasn't home or if a hurricane was coming, kinda worked, but you have to time it right. Sounds mean and bad, but fortunately for my house's sake and my sanity, she started going deaf....so now it's no longer a problem. There are some herbal remedies they sell that may help, a vet told my mom to try some melatonin-but don't remember the dosage on that, also you can try looking up Bach Flower Remedies(another herbal thing), just comfort her, turn the tv or radio up when it starts thundering, or try a prescription from the vet...not much else you can do. Good luck!!!

She reacts so bad, I think I might end up calling her vet and see what he suggests, but I like your ideas, especially the herbal remedies. Thanks!

I think you are doing the best that you can do for her. She needs that comfort when she is frightened like that. You can call a veterinarian and see if your dog can be prescribed some kind of mild sedative to keep her calmer during the storms. A friend of mine has to do that for her 15 year old baby so that he doesn't get too wound up and end up having a heart attack. The sedative is mild enough that it doesn't harm the dog's system, but it is very effective....he just lays there in his house with a very happy smile on his face as if to say, "Life is good. Let the thunder roll, I could care less." It's pretty cute to see him like that.

That's what I'm afraid of, her having a heart attack. I would feel much better if she could just lay there and have a happy smile on her face...LOL. She has been a great dog for us her whole life, and I hate to see her so upset!

That's one thing she doesn't do is hide. She just finds me as quick as she can. I think talking to your dog in a calm voice helps a lot, even if your dog can't understand you they I believe they can understand a lot from the tone of your voice.
