I believe what you mean here is the Republic of the Philippines. It is an archipelagic country part of South East Asia, geographically sandwiched by China in the north and Indonesia in the south. East of the Philippines is the Pacific Ocean and West is the South China Sea and Indochina(Vietnam,Laos,Cambodia) The Philippines was a former colony of Spain until 1898 when the Filipinos revolted and declared independence, thus making the Philippines the first independent republic in Asia. But that republic didn't last long. Within almost a year, the Americans took over the Spaniards and became the new masters/colonizers of the Filipinos(this is how we are properly referred to as a people). However, the Americans worked towards a gradual granting of full independence to the Philippines. The 2nd World War interrupted the process. But after the war, and the Philippines in ruins (Manila's destruction was only 2nd to Warsaw), the Americans decided to give us our national independence creating the Philippines. The Philippines has a decomcratic-republican system which is basically patterned after that of the U.S.A., having a bicameral legislature, an executive department headed by the President and a judiciary. The current President is Mdme. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, daughter of a former President of the republic, and will be serving her full term in office in 2010.
