Religion in politics

Today a question was asked on tv if you would only vote for someone who holds your religious beliefs. (asked by a very christian woman) To me, America is about freedom of religion and therefore religion should have zero part in politics. I've watched this country fight over school prayer, commandments in a gov't buildings, etc., and I'm frankly tired of it. Our forefathers came to this country to escape religious persecution by a church that told them they were wrong for believing how they did. Can we not see that we are doing the same thing only hundreds of years later? If a political candidate doesn't hold the same religious belief as us, does that make him less able to make decisions for the country? How does a belief or lack of belief in jesus make any person better able to serve? And where in our constitution does it say that only christians have a right to decide what is best for each and every person in this country? Whether muslim, christian, jewish, buddist, or wiccan we all have the right to the same protections under the law. We all have the same right to expect that whoever is in office will do what is best for all, not just a few who believe the same way we do. There should be no religion in politics, of any denomination and I don't choose who I vote for based on their religious faith. I was just wondering what ya'all thought of that. Does a persons religion make a difference in who you vote for?

it is true that one's religion should not weigh in politics. when we choose a politician to support, it is not his religion that we are supporting, it is the person. however, it is interesting to note that one's insights in life, one's values and strengths, as well as, waterloos, are all honed and greatly influenced by one's religious background.
