10 am this morning my husband goes into the coop to check on the birds only to be met by a possum busily eating at some grain that was brought into the coop due to threats of rain. HELLO mr possum, don't you know you are supposed to be nocturnal? what are you doing up at this hour? and why are you eating grain instead of the chickens?*shudder* do you think it had rabies? but why would it be eating anything if it was?

LOL Opossums will eat cat food, garbage or most anything. We often see them on our back porch. They are weird animals. They even eat with the outdoor cat - yes at the same time - side by side. Weird little animals for sure. Just because they were eating the grain does not mean they have rabies. This is normal for opossums. If they run into things or walk like they are crazy, then I would be concerned about rabies. Have there been comfirmed cases of rabies in your area this year? Opsossums do come out mostly at night bit it is not unusual to see them in day time also.

I was concerned because of it being daytime - we've never seen one in the daylight that was not squished on the road. heh. thanks for the information. haven't heard of any confirmed cases of rabies this year.

I dont blame you. It is always a posiblity of rabies and that is scary. But it not uncommon to see them in day light.

Modestah, every now and then we see evidence of possums in our neighborhood...usually on the morning our garbage is to be picked up. They love to come and see what they can find if you put it out overnight. We always set ours outside that morning. We have had some reports of rabid possums, raccoons and even a feral (wild) cat in our county here in South FL. Above all, don't try to make a pet of that possum--stick with the chickens!

Haha we used to have a really big opposum that would eat the cat food on our back porch. He would sometimes come at night and we would watch him at the door while he ate on the porch. Sometimes he would eat with the cats in the morning when they got canned food.... He was here for years and then got hit by a car. Poor old guy..

They are funny creatures aren't they? I don't think it's rabid, just really hungry. They can be so fearless at times. We had one actually come to the back door and scratch at the screen, like our cats do when they want in. I almost did let him in, thinking it was the cat! Good think I looked twice before opening the door. LOL

no, it was not even startled in the least. It looked up at dh and then went back to eating the grain, heh - maybe it is his furry face possum may have thought it was just one of his possum buddies come to play.

I think the eating is normal but I would be somewhat concerned about it being out that late in the morning. You might want to keep an eye on any pets or other animals you have but do check and see if there have been any reportings of rabied animals in the area - this could be the first but it still wouldn't hurt to check. I hat Possums - they have to be the ugliest animal I know.
