I was thinking about getting a reel mower now that gas prices are $3.17 a gallon. I hate how loud the mower is but I dont really mind the workout so I was thinking I might enjoy it. They are kind of hard to find but they are online so I wouldnt be able to try it our before I bought one. Does anyone use a reel mower? What are the adantages and disadvantages? How long will one last before we need to buy a new one and how is the upkeep? Thanks. Happythoughts

I have been wanting one also. My husband is a field service representative for a company that services home depots. Home Depot sells two different ones. 18"- $99.00 20"- $129.00 Of course these are prices for our area I am not sure if they will be different in other parts of the US or not. I want it for the exercise and our ditch. Thanks for the post.

The exercise is a big plus for me too. Yard work is hard but I want to work up a good sweat and know I have done my body some good. I have looked at home depot online. I cant find any instores and Im not sure I want to pay 25$ to ship one. There has to be somewhere that stocks them with these gas prices.

My grandfather alwasys used one of these and hated the gas ones. We had one at his house until we moved last year and got rid of it. I personally think that we may all have to go to these as gas just keeps rising and there is no relief in site. As I was filling up the car today, I realized that for 5 gallons of gas for the mower, I would spend over $15. Now that is wrong!! The oil commpanies are killing us and they don't care. It is going to be that lower and middle class people can't mow grass without one of these as the gas for the other mower will not be able to be budgeted in. How Sad!

I think there are a lot of arguments for them. They are a lot of work which people seem to avoid now days. I cant spend that kind of cash filling up a mower knowing I could save it and do the work my self. I thnk as soon as we have a few extra dollars in the bank we will go get one. Even of I dont se it every time it will pay for its self in no time and from then on it will save us tons. Gas just seems to be getting worse, It is time for us to do something about it so we dont end up living in a cardboard box somewhere.

In a world of lazy conveniences, I don't know too many people who are like me and swear by a handpushed motor (I do have another couple friends who do as well). The workout is great, and I hate loud machinery - I don't vacuum either, I sweep. They are definitely a lot more work, but in my opinion not much worse than the cheap motorized mowers which never last long anyway. A new reel mower that is kept away from rain and oiled occasionally will last virtually forever, and as long as the blades are kept sharp you will find that they are surprisingly easy to use. That website is very helpful. Thank you for the tip. I was sold on buying one but now I am even more excited about the challenge. I am not afraid of the exercise. I sweep instead of using a our noisy vac. I use a sweeper and I absolutlty love it. I have 2 small kids and so I am cleaning the carpets a few times a day. It is a life saver. I will be buying a reel mower as soon as my bank account says its okay. Thanks for the help.
