My daughter is 6 and I just taught her how to dial 911 if something happens to me. I didn't want to teach her earlier just in case she thought it was funny and wanted the cops to come to her house =) How old were your kids when you taught them?? She knows how to call Daddy and not the police if something happens. What do you think is a good age to teach this??

I just taught my 7 year old how to do it, and I tried to explain to him when it would be a good idea to call, so hopefully he understands when he needs to use it. Since we have a cordless phone and you have to push talk first then dial I thought it would be best for him to know, and not the 5 year old. I am not sure he would remember, but maybe in a few months i'll try teaching him too. I get nervous because my husband is going away for 6 months, and if something happened to me I want the kids to know what to do. I know the 7 year old wouldn't call unless it was important, but I think the 5 year old would goof around.

I thought my daughter would play around with it too so I waited! I didn't want the cops knocking on my door because she dialed the number and hung up or something!! She would probably think that would be funny!! My uhsband is at work alot to so I wanted her to know who to call for help if she can't reach my husband =) Thanks for your responce!!!

I think that it depend on the child and how fast they are at learning and remembering. I think that 5-6 is a good age to teach them. My daughter is 5 and picks up rather quickly so she knows all the important numbers to call. This is of course 911, her grandparents, and last but not least her parents. It's a great thing that you taught your daughter. Good for you keep up the good work.

All my kids knew how to dial 911 the minute they could recognize their numbers.....between 3 and 4.....when teaching them, always stress that the number is for emergencies only and that dialing it 'for fun' can get them into a lot of trouble

I think all kids should be taught their name, address, phone number and how to dial 911 as soon as they are old enough to talk and understand what you are teaching them. They should also be taught at about age 4 about not talking to strangers, getting into strangers cars and not taking candy or anything from anyone they don't know. LIVE IN PEACE
