No Fear to Fear of the Unknown

I often wonder when a child is young why is it that they dont seem to fear anything. The answer comes from the fact of cause and effect. Like my son he likes to climb trees and he goes quite high and he dont know why i get upset and want him to get down it scares me. The reason for his fearlessness is the fact he has never fallen yet and dont know how it can hurt and a child has know fear of the unknown. I know how it feels to fall from a tree so i know to have the fear. Now that i am older i suffer from fear of the unknown which is kinda strange when you look at it cause as a child it was the other way around. Do you have a fear of the unknown? Do you let that stop you or do you still go out on a limb and try things even though you are scared of the outcome?

That is it exactly- Kids are fearless unless the parents teach them to be fearful- Don’t do that- or shelter them so much. I have found that I was fearless until I had kids – Even after falling out of a tree as a child- I still climbed them knowing how bad it hurt- Fear didn’t keep me down- After having a child is when I experienced fear- I am now responsible for another person- I think this is why I have fear now- I fear for her- but do not shelter her too much or show her the fear- I want her to be fearless- go out and experience all there is to learn and do in life. Oh to be fearless again!

Hi Kat, Yes when children are young they do not understand what fear is. Of course when your son climbs high in the tree then you would be scared this is normal for us parents to worry about our children when they do these things as we know that they can hurt themselves badly when they fall. Yes sometimes I have a fear of the unknown as well. It really all depends on what I am trying to do and so I have to be extremely careful that I do not hurt myself.

I think a little fear is a healthy thing to have. It is nature's way of keeping you out of danger. It is when it starts controlling our lives that it becomes unhealthy. I think I have a slight fear of the unknown but I don't think I am overly fearful. I see a lot of people walking around here in Nicaragua that look as though they have absolutely no fear and many times they are in danger, like when they are standing in the street and refuse to move when a speeding car is coming. I suppose fear is a learned behavior through experience, but I am all for learning through someone else's experience. I don't want to be hurt before I learn a healthy amount of fear for myself.

Having a freshest mind, a child could always do everything he can unless it made him/her realize it even hurts back. Bottomline is that, they dont have the complete "record" on the effect of that thing they planned to do. Just like in my case, i used to let him watch "tom & jerry" cartoons. And later on i found the show contains a sort of violence. And sometimes when i was asleep and i was shocked when i got "pak" on my face. OMG! My son hit me up with his kiddie rifle. So, i should say, he adopted the same from the show. I have fears of doing things especially when i dont know the consequence. So, i used to stop it earlier and or find leads to consequence.

That's the beauty of children they don't know fear..many times fear is a learned thing that unfortunately we get from our parents...As far as fear of the unknown...when you think of it..life itself is the unknown...as we never truly know what direction life will lead us
