Look for items that close late at night, when not a lot of bidders will be online. Have another window open, one that you can refresh constantly. Put your last bid in right before the auction closes and hope for the best!

If you really, really want something, you need to be there at the end of the auction. Wait until there's about a minute left, and make your highest bid. I did that with a solid wood dining set that I wanted so bad. It was tense waiting, but I jumped in with the winning bid at the last minute. No one had a chance to outbid me. I got the whole fantastic set for $130.00.
