Has anyone used an international plan for their cell phone?

I'm traveling soon and am going to be out of the US until about the end of the year and I would like to have a cell phone available for my wife to call if something is going on. So has anyone used the international plan with their cell phone provider? I currently have cingular/at&t and looking at their international plan I'm a little confused. I probably will just end up trying to find a prepaid phone when I get over there and use that, it will depend on what is the most cost effective. If you've had any experience with international calling with a cell phone, who did you do it through and how much did it cost?

My sister who's in the UK, when she visits us here, she still uses her phone plan. I think she's on Vodafone. She just asks Vodafone to turn on the "roaming" feature of her cell phone so that she won't change numbers and it would get charged to her bill. If you get a prepaid phone in the country you're going, it would be cost effective if the exchange rate of the US dollar to the local currency is higher.

Hi coachflaps! Well, I'm not really familiar with International Plan there because here in the Philippines if you are going abroad and you would like for your network to still work whether you are a plan or prepaid subscriber, you just have to go the nearest business center and tell them that you would like to have your international roaming on and it's for free. However, the charges are more than half of what you spend locally. Try asking your network about your roaming if it's available. I'm not sure what my sister's network provider is (because she lives in the US) but when she comes here once a year, she just buys a prepaid simcard to get in touch with her husband and kids.
