He has 40 chicken and 5 weeks of food. So we can say that he has (40x5) 200 chick weeks of food. If he keeps only 1 chicken he can feed it for 200 weeks. But 2 chicken only for 100 weeks. Now how many chicken weeks did he spend. He kept selling his chicken, and everyweek the chicken he fed reduced. It was 40,35,30,25,20,15,10,5. This adds up to 180. So he had to spend only 180 chicken weeks of his food. Now out of 200, 20 is left. It is 10%.
