what is fashion?

What exactly is fashion? I see fashion shows on the tv and I see the clothes you can never wear, either too bizarre or too blatant. So I wonder what is fashion anyway. If I wear clothes which I am comfortable in them, is it fashion? If someone starts a trend and I follow it, then is it fashion? How can you be fashionable? Should it be different? Should it be eye catching? I get confused about fashion all the time.
