"just friends."

have you heard this phrase before? that guy or gal you have a weekly drink with, have long conversations with into wee hours of the morning, who you share secrets with, who you have borderline romantic moments with?--and then BOOM! the death sentence. "just friends." the apocalypse of hopes and desires cut by one little phrase. in the aftermath, how are we to deal? how do we function? i want to hear stories.

It sounds discouraging if you have feelings and hopes for something more. My usual reaction is to apologize and to go at home. This is too painfull for me to stay with my "just friend".
