It is part of retrospective human nature-an echo of the idyllic quality of long for a halcyon past. But our modern cult of nostalgia is on a different scale-a pernicious wallowing and a destructive dissatisfaction with the now permeates much of our culture. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be. we are obsessed with our own selective memories, which have been commercialised, repacked and sold back to us. As modern life becomes more uncertain and confusing, we yearn for a secure, imagined past.
