what's the best way to treat acne?

i really get annoyed because when my monthly period is coming, my acne begins to multiply! it makes me so irritated because i want to have a smooth clean face and im trying so hard to maintain it. and then, there comes that time of the month when my acne starts to appear! is there anyway to stop acne completely without going to the dermatologist? do you know of any topical application?
