The Snake and My Cat!

Many years ago, when I was married to my first husband, we used top live on a property. We had 27 acres on a hillside, fairly near the beach, on the outskirts of the city. There were no neighbours. At the time, we had two dogs & four cats. There were a LOT of snakes, mostly brown & black. The common brown snake is one of the deadliest in thw World. My late husband did a lot to stop snakes entering the house & the immediate surroundings. Obviously snakes were prolific on the rest of the propery, particularly near the dam & the creek. He put a barbwired fence 2 m in hieght around the front yard. This to stop snakes getting in, where the dogs were kept. Once, a brown snake did get in, and the dogs had hold of it, one end each. Fortunately they wwre not bitten, as dogs rarely survive snake bites. We couldn't of course, keep the cats from climbing the fence. Two if our cats were scared of snakes & would run away from them. They were never bitten.. One morning, my husband got up before me, & when he walked into the hallway, I heard him say: "Oh, my God, what have you done?"In the hallway was a black snake, not a very big one, about one metre in lengh. It was dead. Next to the snake was sitting one of our cats guarding it. He had caught it, and managed to climb the 2 metre barb wired fence, carrying the snake at the same time, then bring it inside through the cat flap. Fortunately he had not been bitten. Months later, this cat & another were bitten by snakes. In fact we had 4 snake bites in a twelve month period, to the same two cats. One of them was seriously ill & needed to be kept in a humidity crib for 2 days. It was not long after that, we decided to sell up & move. There were just too many snakes.

I see you live in Australia, wow it sounds amazing to live somewhere with so much land and with cats and dogs, it really does, I am envious. Obviously the snake thing I am not quite so envious about but still...I live in Dublin, Ireland in a small house with not very much garden. And crap weather also lol. Its good to hear you no longer live near the snakes, I hope you still live somewhere nice though. And your cat was very brave.

I guess Florida isn't the only place with a snake problem. None of my cats ever got involved with snakes, and luckily, my pit bull had the good sense to just bark and stay away from them. We had rattlers, cotton-mouth mocassins, and coral snakes, so it was pretty adventurous. We even had a harmless black snake get into our trailer. Add the snakes to all the biting and stinging bugs, and I'm very glad not to be living in the deep south any more.

Oh my gosh, I'd never be able to live in an area like that...I am terrified of any animal that moves fast-snakes, rats, ect. I don't blame you for finally moving. I've seen pictures of pythons and such and I think I'd have a heart attack if one ever got near me lol. I hope your pets were all ok. LIVE IN PEACE

oh my! I think the snakes have done some revenge on your cats. If I am on that situation, I will never ever live on a place with snakes for I will just risk my and my pets life. It's good to prevent than have some feeling of guilt inn the end right? I can imagine that place now, full of snakes.. eee terrible!

Your story reminds me of one that occurred when I moved in with my mom in 1983. I was in the workshop refinishing a small table when my Mom came down madder than hell. Her first words to me were "WHEN DID YOU DO IT???" I, of course, was innocent and I looked at her and asked "Do what?" She got madder and snapped that I knew darn good and well what it was. I looked her right in the eyes and stated that I had no idea of what she was talking about. She snapped at me "WHEN DID YOU PUT THE RUBBER SNAKE IN THE KITCHEN???" I tried to convience her that I didn't put a rubber snake in the kitchen. She then snapped at me that I was to march right into the house and pick up the rubber snake and get rid of it! We both went back into the house and the "rubber" snake was backed into the corner of the kitchen by my Siamese. She had just had kittens and after the kittens were weaned she went in and got that problem solved. She was little more than bones with skin and fur over them. I raced out of the house and around to the back door to save my cat. I got behind her, and she was so intent on her prey that when I touched her she jumped so high and hard that she nearly knocked me out. I gathered up the cat and put her in my bedroom. We then called a neighbor to help deal with the snake. When we first spoke to the neighbor's wife, her first words were "Is it real?" and then her second question was "what kind is it?" My answers were "Yes" and "I didn't ask it what kind of snake it is". The neighbor called her husband through the window, and he asked the same two questions. Well he decided to come down to help deal with the snake. In the mean time my mom decided to put the dog in the bedroom out of the way. The dog was terrified of snakes. If he saw a snake he would never go in that area again. So, we had a problem as mom's bedroom was reached by going through the kitchen where the snake was. She managed to get the dog down the hall way and into her bedroom without his seeing the snake. The neighbors arrived and removed the snake. We were informed that it was only semi poisonous and that if you got bit you would only get sick, you wouldn't die. It took my mom and me to walk through the house-we would search the floor at night before we would get up to go to the bathroom. Until the day my mom passed away we got the giggles about our snake in the kitchen. A P.S. to the story, the wife of the man who dealt with the snake passed away, as did my mom. Well the man and I have gotten together and are deeply in love with each other.

This was an amazing experience for you. I read your story with bated breath to see what would happen. Even though this snake was semi poisonous, it was still good that yoiu removed your dog, as dogs have a very fast circulation & usually die from snake bites.

My cats have brought me many "treasures" but never a snake. I am thankful for that. That had to have been a rather scary sight. I am glad you moved away from there.

LOl...Thats what you get when you live in the bush isnt it, but some places are worse than others as you found out. Poor little cats. Snakes are so frightening, we get some every now and then and I run a million miles the other way.

What kind of brown snake? There are a lot of brown snakes, what part of the county were you in? Did the snake have any markings? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but snakes give me the shivers, I am so afraid of them. I have them where I live also. We live in the country, I have a pond right outside my patio door that has nothing but snakes and turtles in it b/c my in laws cows have ruined it, now we are waiting to get the money together to have it redug for fish and clean up around it. But yesterday I had the longest snake I'd seen in my yard, he was very long and looked very mature, I didn't get close enough to see what kind he/she was. Maybe a chicken snake or a rattler, could have been a water moccassin, it was a snake that's all I knew. I'm glad you moved, I would have too. I would move from here if I could too, but my hubby was raised out here and he loves it. I do too, just not the snakes!!

I believe the correct name is Common Brown Snake, but most people here just call it a brown snake. When they are very young, they have a yellowish patch on their head, but this fades as they grow.

I would move too. I hate snakes, specially dangerous ones. There are snakes around here that aren't too bad, at least they're not poisonous and they don't try to bite, but try to get away from people. They're still ugly and creepy.

asians like to use sulfur to ward off snake, a little bit extra sulfur in your property is not going to harm the environment.

Oh dear! What a highly adventurous area for your animals! You must be proud that your furbabies take it all in good stride. Animals are the proudest when they bring their kill to mom and dad.

One of my current cats loves to bring her kill to the front door, as she wants to bring them inside. Birds & mice are usuals, but occassionally rats. She makes this weird sound when she has caught something!

I think I would move also. I hate snakes more than anything. That would be awful. It sounds like your cats liked trying to catch them.

I could never live close to venemous snakes. I already nearly paniced when I saw the first garter snake in my yard. In 9 years I have only seen 3 and they are non venemouse but one of my dogs always trys to bite them so usually I can tell by how she is acting if there is one about. They are more scared of her and quickly burrow into the ground.

Oh no, jenny. I honestly don't know what to feel if I live in that house. I don't think I will ever sleep again, LOL. Seriously, I am not exactly a snake fanatic. I absolutely refused to see one. I think I have a fear for snake. I don't know. Snake is just not my favorite animal. Its a good thing both you and your first husband decided to move out. Those snakes can be nasty and scary.

That's typical of cats! Blimey! Thannkfully the cat had killed the snake and not just stunned it! Imagine waking up next to that! *shudder* I don't know how you could live there all that time! I am petrified of snakes! It is a shame though, because apart from the snakes, the property sounds absolutely lovely! I'm glad that you were never bitten though!
