How many people believe sales 'science'?

We are constantly bombarded with consumerism fuelled science from newspapers and television. I've seen a few people asking whether things 'actually work' after seeing "amazing results" in a commercial! Are you hoodwinked into choosing expensive brands, or do you choose the cheaper alternative? Please take a look at the link below. I'm not affiliated to the site. The writer is a REAL scientist who writes a column in a UK national newspaper debunking many of the items and issues we're fooled about by the mass media. http://www.badscience.net/

These days I ignore commercials with *science* mentioned anyway as it's all a load of rubbish. Product X contains £$%*&^$%£!" and Product Y contains (*&^%$£" with added (*&^%$£ Yeah right. So over-hyped, over-priced skin creams are so much better than good old bob standard baby lotion :-)

Did you read the stuff about the boots #7 cream? That story was flying around for weeks and everyone took it as truth that this stuff worked. Shops were sold out and it was going for silly money on ebay. In effect, it's not proven to be better than any other 'miracle' moisturiser, but compares well with the standard creams it was tested against. The 'active ingredient' is well known, but only available on prescription due to negative side-effects.

You should have a look at this stuff gabs, it talks about all sorts of stuff our TV's and newspapers are full of. it does get a bit deep in the science stuff sometimes, but i guess it's a complex subject.
