Short circuit caused by lightning. When lightning strikes a power line, it creates a large power surge which overpowers surge protector. To protect my computer against lightning, I simply unplug it along with phone cables. Any other method do you adopt against lighting? Please share.

I use a quality surge protector as I've fried a computer once during a major storm here in Minnesota USA. I also have a surge protector for my phone which is cordless yet uses electricity as well. It helps protect the phone line also as there's a jack for phone lines to be plugged in and protected as well. So I say get a quality surge protector at like Best Buy, Circuit City maybe even a store like Comp USA. Any computer store sells the high end quality surge protectors. I paid around $60 for the 2 that I have and feel it's saved me a lot also. Thanks. Here's a link for a cheaper surge protector with modem protection also. http://www.pacificcable.com/PacificCable_Product.asp?DataName=SP5&IsListing=YES HAPPY P[OSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We use a protector that my husband bought from an electronic store. We use it for the computers as well as the TVs, etc. Unfortunately I don't have any other method to protect against lightning but I think the one you gave is the best. There are not that many lightnings here in California but next time there is one I better think of your solution. Thank you for sharing with us.

Same as you, I just pull out any cables that leads out of my house. Computer plugs, TV plugs etc with cables. There is no other shortcut out. Lightening is too heavy to have some protection.

Unplugging just the mains will not help. You do the right thing by even taking off the phone lines connected to your pc. Electricity even passes through phone lines and may burn your modem. I usually never swith the pc on when there is thunder or rains coz first of all the electricity board here turns the mains off and the power is restored only when the rains are cleared. One more thing to be done to protect our pc is to get proper earthing done. Even if there is an excess of power supply caused by lightening it is absorbed by this wire and thereby our pc is safe.

You can get a power surge protector. That's what we have. We live in the Prairies where there are a lot of lightening storms. Also make sure that you have three pronged plug wall sockets instead of two.
