Pro's & Cons of Blog Directories

What are the pro's and con's of blog directories? Do you think blog directories help your search engine position, or hurt it and why? Do you think its a great way to create quality backlinks? Is it better to submit to niche blog directories that offer categories in your paticular topic or intrest? Whats your thoughts? I think having your blog in a blog directory is more of an advantage because the link will be indexed in search engines and even your co-bloggers can see it to. It would also help you to increase your blog's traffic.
