Remember when you were a kid and you were going on a trip with the family (say, to Grammy & Grampy's house, or maybe the Zoo)...and within about 1/2 hour of leaving home you'd say "are we there yet?" Of course, your mom and dad probably wanted to stuff a sock in your mouth, because everyone knew there was still over an hour ride to go! Nonetheless, it seemed to be like a "routine", I think.
This "cliche" has actually become quite popular in the entertainment world as well. Numerous comedians have used it in some of their 'one-liners'; many comic 'skits' utilize it to get laughs because 'everyone' seems to identify with it.
What about you?

lol i am even guilty of saying that...i do not sit still well and when we go on a long drive (like 4 hours or more) i tend to get just as antsy as the kids...
when they were little, (they are now 10 & 14) when we went on a long drive (we go to a camp 4 hours away every year) i used to go to the dollar store and buy stuff for them to do and give them to them on the day of the trip...like a goodie bag...it had candy and colouring books and the like...now that they are older they take their music with them or whatever...
another good thing to do is to stop say every two hours just to get a snack, go pee or just to walk around...that seems to help (this year we are going on a trip that takes 6 hours lol! and no, i will not get them a dvd player either!)

it is natural for us to be uttering these words because, it releases the excitement that we feel deep inside us. we are looking forward to reaching the point of destination because, deep inside us, we know that we will be getting the treat of our lives. now that we have gone older we will say, 'oh, how long can this trip to that place really be'. this line shows our feelings of tiredness about having to go through such lengths in order to have a place of solace.

Ahh, yes! How familiar! When our 3 daughters were small, we did similar things to help keep them occupied. And, I hear you about the DVD player! Today, car makers are paying attention and offering options of those for back seat passengers. How cool is that!?
Of course, the kids might be "numb" as they watch (and listen with their headphones), so you may not be able to talk to them! Hmmmmmm.....that might be ok, no? They're really not that expensive, I don't think...tell them to buy their own! lol
Thanks for the post, and good luck on this year's trip!

Ahh, the days of innocence. I remember, after learning basic math, oops, arithmetic, where one of us kids would AWTY & mom would say we have so many miles to go or so many hours yet. 10 minutes later one of us would AWTY again, & again mom would reply with an answer. Seeing how I was so smart, I figured out that she was ADDING to the miles\time yet to go. No wonder it took forever & a day to get anywhere. Also, did anyone else ever crawl up into the back window to take a nap or watch the world go by from the rear view? Do that nowdays & you'd have all kinds of folks having hissy fits.

Heheheh.....
Yep...same-o here. Goes to show how gullible we were...lol.
RE: the rear window napping...yes, I believe I've done that once or twice in my time. It was a bit 'eery' watching the buildings and telephone poles/wires zip past in a rather 'out of the ordinary' visual experience! And, you're right, today if the Police didn't climb up the tailpipe, other drivers would be wagging their collective tongues and fingers, for sure!
Thanks for your post.

yes, i can still remember those days when the family embarks to go to a place for a vacation or camping activity. this only shows how excitement has filled the heart of a child to be so impatient to be able to get immediately to the place of destination. anyway, the old folks has the equivalent of this and it goes: 'oh, we are so far yet. let's take a rest for a while and take something to eat. let's park this car awhile, okay?' it is true that everyone of us can identify with these lines of the children and the oldies.
