Hi we might be getting a Bullmastiff tomorrow and I just wondered if any of you know anything about them. Anything we can say or know that might increase our chances of getting her. If you have any experience of dogs in particular Bullmastiffs then please share it here and let us know before we get this gorgeous dog. Thanks.

We had a bull mastiff named Rex for a couple of years. He was a beautiful dog. We got him from the pound but the vet confirmed what he was. He was very good natured, although protective of the family especially the women. The cat and him were best buddies and played together. The cat would even scratch his back. Now I will warn you their tail should be registered as a lethal weapon :) It gets to wagging and you don't want it to hit you. It has a lot of force. My dad got hit in the back of the neck once by it and swore he saw stars from it. We had him back when we lived in Michigan. He loved to grab a log to bring in to chew. He also liked to play fetch, including trying to find the snowball my brother threw for him into a snow bank (I know my brother had a sick sense of humor). He loved car rides and also stealing of beds. He'd move into the bed from the wall side until even with you and then stretch out his paws, pushing you out of the bed.
I wish you luck in getting yours.

Thanks so much for your advice we have decided against it though. The dog came round today it was a beautiful dog, but it was just too big. It kept knocking our daughter down not that it was her fault she was just so big and our daughter was a little bit frightened of her.

You are most welcome. I'm sorry the dog didn't work out for you. They are very big I know and I can see how a little girl would be a bit scared. I wish you luck with finding the right dog for you. I know it's not always easy.

Mickie30, I am not familiar with where you live so I'd just like to make a general comment with regard to your purchase of a Bullmastiff or any other type of dog that you may be considering .
I have found out quite accidently that Insurance companies won't
cover the policy if you have certain dogs living on the premises .
Before you purchase any dog I'd consider calling the company that your insured with to get the list of dogs that are on the "Restricted List" .

Where are you getting her from?
Bullmastiffs and other giant breeds are prone to lots of health problems. Hip and elbow dysplasia run rampant in all the Mastiff, and is very very very expensive to treat as well as painful for the dog. (Think hip replacements!) They also very commonly are affected by hypothyroidism which can cause a slew of problems later on down the road.
Make sure that you ask whoever you are getting this dog from to see the documentation that both parents were screened for these disorders and have passed for both hips and elbows as well as tested "normal" for thyroid. Any good breeder will be able to provide this for you. If they cannot or do not, run away!
There is more breed specific information here at http://clubs.akc.org/aba My experience with Bullmastiffs is only nominal so I can't give you the specifics, but I do know that the larger, powerful breeds need a good strong owner that won't let them get away with anything as puppies because once the puppy grows into a 170lb dog, its nearly impossible to control it.
