Do you purchase waterproof mascara?

i am what you may call a vain person because i like make-ups and cosmetics and perfumes, etc. but mind you, the only make-up that i put on my face are face powder, lip gloss and concealer. i dont put blush-on, mascara, eyeliner, etc. now, i am just curious about waterporoof mascara because one time, my friend put it on her eyelashes and true enoug, it was really waterproof for the whole day! it did not blot, it did not smudge. however, when she tooka a shower at the ened of the day, she was already worried since the mascara still wont come off! she tried putting petroleum jelly on it and still, it did not come off. she called the customer care of that mascara that she bought and they told her that she has to buy their "mascara remover". i was just wondering if all waterproof mascara has to be bought with mascara remover or was my friend just scammed?
