My electric company is in the protection racket.

I'm sure mine is not the only one. The bill from my electric system includes an offer to purchase (from them) a surge protector and a service agreement. This is to prevent accidental overloads from "damaging or destroying your electronics or major appliances." If they have a device that will prevent surges, shouldn't they be GIVING it to us? What other service do we buy that doesn't promise not to cause us harm? It reminds me of a Monty Python skit. A mob of meter readers show up and comment on what nice electronics and major appliances you have. Wouldn't it be a shame if something happened to them?
