What are the differences between a NOVEL and a SHORT STORY?

Is it that a short story is simply of lesser length and novel long?....Short story should be like seeing some object for an instant or in a flash. All the writing should be focussed on the main theme or emotion. Novel has no such limitations.It can be of any length, any number of charecters.It can be like an old sack into which you can put anything you deem proper. It usually depicts a life time or generations of individuals.In short story the writing craft and story are equally important.
