My 4yr old has a few nightmares, as I'm sure most kids do, but occaisonally he has night terrors. He is very hard to calm down, although most times he isn't really awake. Do your kids have night terrors, and if so, have you got any tips on how to quickly settle them back to sleep? My son is sometimes still crying and freaked out for thirty minutes or more.

My oldest used to have night terrors when he was about 2 or so and they are very upsetting to deal with...During a night terror the child ISNT awake (though they cn look like they are which freaked me right out!)and they dont remember them more often than not...problem is, I found they have to pretty much run their course...Stay close by so he doesnt get hurt(sometimes a child goin through a night terror will actually get out of bed and walk around) and try to comfort him but DONT try to wake him since you can actually seriously upset him by doin that (night terrors are harmless)...thats what I was instructed by my sons doc back when he was havign them...
worse comes to worse though and its too much for you then just call the doctor and see what he/she says....

Thanks for your answer, it is very helpful. I think that is the hardest part, it is so freaky for us as parents to have to see our kids so scared and upset, and not really be able to do anything about it. It's good to know not to wake him, because that was one of the things we often wondered about. I guess my wife and I keep doing as we have been, and know it is not harmful to him. Thanks again!

My middle duaghter used to get them and the only thing we could do for her is to have my husband pick her up and walk her arround or put her on the couch so she didnt wake my other children untill she came out of it herself. Then she would calmly ask for a drink of water or milk and pass right out again untill the morning. Then she couldent figure out how she got on the couch. she wouldent remember taving the dream in the first place.

Yes, I just find it so heartbreaking and frustrating, knowing he only needs to really see us and he would settle, but this takes so long.Well, it seems like a long time while it is happening! He just gets so worked up. My son also never has any recollection of his nightmares. Thanks for your reply.

Yes it is commo in growing children as most of them never forget the facts of reality of that in the movies and some in their imaginations narrated by their friends at school, but my son is too small to understand it and he doesnot face this till now. My brother son used to be the same as your kid and they used to bring himout of his sleep or the imagination he had in his dream and then they used to console him that their is no fear or terror as we are around you and by asking him to pray the lord before he goes to bed saying that the god will save you from the terror and fear ,by doing thius the boy had the positive thinking about this and slowly as time passes when he came to know the truth he is no more afearer and is very happy now with his sound sleep,so just we need to tell hium all the time the ways how he should overcome the fear with any of the help.
