Has anyone been to a Chinese Herbalist?

May 17, 2007 1:03pm CST
My daughter is ill again with a temperature, she seems to always pick up every bug that is going. I am considering taking her to a chinese herbalist to see if they can give her anything to boost her immune system. However I don't know anyone who has been to one before and I wondered what they were like and if they would be able to help us. Does anyone know anything about them?

I have been to a chineese herbalist in the past but did not feel any benefit from what i was taking and it was quite expensive, I have a four year old daughter who hardly ever gets poorly and although don't get me wrong I like to keep a clean house I don't think that constantly wiping a childs face and banning them from doing the things like playing in the mud ect helps them in the slightest, I know we are in a very clean concious era but I would definately say that all these pills and potions don't really do much besides empty your purse/wallet. Before all this clean concious stuff came about there was a lot less illness. When I was little I was constantly ill adn still am and my mom always kept a spotless house and we were not allowed to get dirty at all, I try to be not so bad with my little girl and that seems to have paid off. Also if she does get poorly rather than wrapping her up in cotton wool (unless she is really poorly of course) I try to carry on with the normal routines and ensure she gets some fresh air if only in the garden, we need germs so that our body can recognise them in order to fight off infection, I'm not saying let your daughter drink from the toilet seat but to introduce her to different environments and allow her to do the mucky mud pie thing in the back garden, it will naturally help her build up her immune system and not cost you a penny. Hope this helps.

I don't keep a really clean house either. I don't use bleach at all and I have no problem with the kids getting dirty. We had dogs while she was little and now have a cat and I have been told that animals help them build up their immune system. But her little sister who wasn't around animals so much as a baby is much healthier. its very odd.

I have never been to a Chinese herbalist but I was able to use some medicines and food supplements from the Chinese and so far it was effective.

My mom goes to one. He isn't Chinese - but he's got all those Eastern medicine degrees and certificates. He's actually really good. She has lupus and ostea and she switched from the Western medicine to the Eastern and her bone density is better and her lupus is better. He also gave me some Chinese medicine for allergies and for nausea and it works incredibly well.

Hi Michelle. Well I haven't personally, but my partner had a stomach ulcer a few years ago, so he went to one just to see if there were any natural remedies. Don't want to put you off, but they were really expensive, and just gave him this disgusting assortment of herbs and tree bark to boil up with water, and drink, which had got to be the most revolting smell I have ever encountered. He was supposed to drink the vile stuff night and morning for a week, and, supposedly the pain was supposed to go. Well - sadly - it didn't - the concoction just made him sick, and in the end he had to go to a "normal" Doctor for proper treatment including some surgery. The Doctor said the stuff they gave him probsbly irritated his stomach and made it worse. I also had a work colleague who went to one forhigh blood pressure, and that didn't work either - just more vile smelling drinks for her too! So - personally - I am not a fan of them. Hope your daughter gets better soon.

I have been to a few in the States. I find them ver useful for helping to balance out the body as they have a unique diagnosis and I drink a lot of chinese herbal teas. I especially like the liver detoxing one. My hubby sends them from the States as they are quite expensive hear. I find them very good and they don't just deal with the current illness, they look at the body holistically. For example any eye problems are related to some liver deficiency. Any sinus problems corespond to the kidneys. There is also the yin/yang theory and five elements theory combined. There is yin and yang in every organ and when the flow of qi is either interrupted or running too violently through the organs affected, this is what causes disease. I hope this little synopsis helps. A good Chinese Herbalist will also help with dietary requirements and what one should eat or avoid eating.

Is it just me or do the 2nd and 10th comments seem very similar..almost like they're written by the same person.... Anyway, it seems that some chinese herbalists are genuine and others are scams. I would take your daughter to a naturopath first. Another suggestion is to get her0 blood analysed. My aunt did this a few years ago as she was also getting sick frequently, despite her healthy lifestyle, (and even though it was quite expensive) she was told to go vegetarian, she was told what foods to eat more of, what foods to eat less of etc. She swears by it and says she's never felt better. Good luck.

You may want ot take her to a homeopathic doctor or someone specialized in ayurveda (Indian herbal medicine) but also consider that sometimes children need to get sick to build up an immunesystem.

are nyou serious or joking if you are joking then dont but if you are serious then its my humbel but strong request do not ever think of doing that. time and again, their cures are proven to be fakes. i have been their victim.so think before you act, ask your near-bys what they have to say ..
